Reading, Writing, and Intolerance

by Jeremy Hooper

Stephen HuntThis is Stephen M. Hunt, at-large member of the Fairfax County School Board in Fairfax, Virginia; hey there, Steve!

Stevie, being the wise man that he is, apparently feels the one thing that every student needs in order to grow into a successful adult are speeches from deceptive homophobes who cleverly pass off bigotry through false-compassion. How else could one explain why Mr. H has written principals in his county, asking them to host speakers with an "ex-gay perspective" and offer anti-gay literature provided by conservative organizations? According to AP reports, S-Dog feels it's wrong to teach children that homosexuality is normal and natural, and he contends that gays often suffer drug, alcohol or physical abuse.

Fortunately for gay kids in Fairfax, not everyone in their education system is as misinformed as Mr. Hunt. Superintendent Jack Dale has written area principals saying Hunt's views are i no way sanctioned by the county's board or administration. Thanks for that, Jack.

Unfortunately, Mr. Hunt's term is scheduled to run through 2007, giving him ample time to vigorously push hate into the school curriculum. But we'll have our eye on you Mikey, you nutty guy, you!
