Gay marriage opponent to head Missouri Women's Council; Council hides k.d. lang CD

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has appointed Vicky Hartzler -- former spokesperson for the state's "Coalition to Protect Marriage"-- to serve as chairwoman of the Missouri Women's Council. Or as it is now known - the "Missouri Pro-Family Council to Protect the Sanctity of Morally Fit Women Who Believe that Traditional One Man, One Woman Marriage Is Under Attack by the Militant Homosexual Agenda."

Pending Senate confirmation, Hartzler's term as chairwoman would run through Dec. 6 2007. After that, maybe someone who passionately dedicated their energies to dashing Hartzler's hopes to have her loving relationship legally recognized will be considered for the gig. It's only fair, right?

Past Hartzler Quotes:

Regarding rights gays lose due to marriage bans:

"Hospital visitations is not worthy of throwing the definition of traditional marriage into the trash heap of history. There's lots of people who would like benefits. ... That doesn't mean the government should say (they) can be married." [AP]

Regarding the passage of the state's marriage banning amendment:

"People were motivated by frustration and values. Frustration, because they're tired of seeing the judicial system circumvent the will of the people to advance a liberal agenda. Values, because people value traditional marriage and they don't want to see that wiped away by a few judges. They think God had a good plan in the beginning and we should go forward with it." [Village Voice]

Asked if the amendment would lead to harassment for gay people:

"Most of the people who are for traditional marriage believe in loving each other and following the law. That is, if they're Christian people and follow Jesus' example." [Village Voice]
