Weld's gay support makes some GOP cronies uncomfy
According to the NY Post, former Massachusetts Gov. and potential GOP candidate for NY Governor William Weld is sponsoring a weekend event hosted by Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth, a move that is causing some within his party to say "What the Dem?" The paper quotes State Conservative Party Chair Michael Long as saying, "It would seem to me — forget the Conservative Party — that this is the wrong move for an individual contemplating running for governor on the Republican line."
Which is, of course, because Republicans tend to not support rights and equality for 'weekend events.'
Regarding the gay backing, NYP also quotes Brandon Quinn, former executive director of the state GOP, as saying "[Weld] must think he's still in Massachusetts." However, we think that's crazy unlikely as a Boston accent and a Long Island accent are so totally different. In a Boston accent, a much greater variety of distinctions between short and long vowels before medial r` is made than in Long Island speak. Also in NY, the a's and o's (as in 'talk' and 'coffee') are much different than those vowel sounds in the Boston dialect.
So yea, confusion between the two regions should be minimal. He must just like us no matter where we reside.
