AFAers credit selves for halting Britney's 'Cruci-fixins'
Responding to NBC's announcement that Britney Spears will NOT be playing a conservative Christian who hosts a cooking show called "Cruci-fixins'" on an upcoming episode of "Will & Grace," and their assertion that the initial press release touting Spears' planned role was faulty, American Family Association president Don Wildmon released the following skeptical statement:
“NBC wanting us to believe they were mistaken in describing the segment, that they didn't know what was in their own press release, just doesn't hold water,” said AFA Chairman Donald E. Wildmon. “Plainly put, NBC heard from their affiliates that they did not want to go through another ‘Book of Daniel’ situation while losing millions in advertising avenue.”
Meaning that for the first time, we (sort of) agree with Don Wildmon: It certainly does seem like the peacock net acted more like a capon and capitulated on their plans, as the idea that such a detailed release could make its way out of the NBC press office with such faulty intelligence is a pretty ridiculous notion. Releases don't tend to be comprised of off the cuff speculation unsupported by fact, but rather meticulously worded details that pass the eyes of several before making their way to the media. So yea -- we think there's a good chance that NBC backed down.
Now, that being said, we'd like to simply ask Mr. Wildmon: Is there any way for one to parody or send-up the world of conservative evangelicalism that wouldn't lead you to take boycott-threatening offense, or is the mere mention of the Bible on a studio audience-filled sound stage enough for you to green light an angry missive? Ya know, because correct us if we're wrong, but conservative Christians are part of the American fabric, thus they would seem to be suitable subjects for satirical use. "Will & Grace" has gently ribbed gay, Jew, Hispanic, etc. stereotypes for years -- what makes conservative Christianity off limits? Poking fun at something does not equate distaste for the poked.
Though we rarely agree with AFA boycotts when they are do to overtly sexual imagery or language, in those instances we do see how someone could take offense. However, we will never get behind the idea that certain sects of the population are simply off-artistic-limits because they say its so. If the AFA and their cronies would actually remove the proverbial pole that seems so firmly planted in their derrieres and start laughing at themselves a little bit, we would all be much better off.
