Wherein we Frowny at Laffey's college musings
It's been revealed that Stephen Laffey (pic.), the Rhode Island Republican who's challenging incumbent Lincoln Chafee for his Senate seat, wrote some anti-gay columns while a student at Maine's Bowdoin College. According to the Providence Journal, Laffey said in the early 80's columns:
"I have never once seen a happy homosexual. This is not to say there aren't any; I simply haven't seen one in my lifetime. Maybe they are all in the closet. All the homosexuals I've seen are sickly and decrepit, their eyes devoid of life."
He also reportedly said of gay pop singer Boy George:
"It wears girl's clothes and puts on makeup," ..."When I hear it sing, 'Do you really want to hurt me, do you really want to make me cry,' I say to myself, YES, I want to punch your lights out, pal, and break your ribs." Laffey then added, "I say let's get those pinkos out of the music business and replace them with some tough conservatives."
Wow, some old school, Alex P. Keaton-era antipathy! Makes this writer want to strap on some leg warmers and...well, I just wanna wear some leg warmers. A good look, those.
Though maybe we shouldn't be so quick to judge Laffey for his college musings, as we would never want to be held to our own mid-90's thoughts:
::sigh:: You can almost hear the modem screeching...
For his part, Laffey has apologized for the columns, saying:
"Do I regret some of these things? Sure,"... "But at the time, we were just having fun. We thought it was funny."
Because seriously, what says "good time" like expressing a desire to break a pop star's ribs? "Oh, I'm bored -- let's go crack Britney Spears' sternum!" Hmm...call us old fashioned if you must, but that just doesn't rev our engines now, nor do we remember it doing so in our college days of yore.
But hey, Mr. Laffey was an undergrad in the early 80's. Wasn't "sickly and decrepit, their eyes devoid of life" just slang for "cool" back then?
