Don't Debate, Don't Vote

by Jeremy Hooper

U.S. Rep Marty Meehan's “Military Readiness Enhancement Act," a piece of legislation designed to repeal the military's ban on openly gay soldiers, now seems unlikely to come up for a vote during this Congressional session (which adjourns later this month).

So sit tight, gay soldiers, as while you'll retain the right to die for your country, it's gonna be a bit longer before you gain the right to reveal the identity of the tangible human for whom you'd risk your life. "Tell my wife I love her" may be the soldier's most common dying wish, but it looks like "Just please f***ing let me tell my partner that I love him or her and not, in turn, render myself unemployed!" will have to remain our undying cry.

Meehan tells the Lowell Sun that he will introduce the bill again in the next Congress. Here's hoping Staff Sergeant Joe will be able to introduce his partner Bill sometime within the next century!
