Those who conveniently forget the past are condemned to condemn us
In a quote in which he attempts to both denounce the Philadelphia School District's recognition of Gay & Lesbiam History Month and deny similarities between racist attitudes and anti-gay sentiment, our ol' buddy Peter LaBarbera says to BP News:
“The schools are equating homosexuality with racial tolerance,” ...“Obviously, racial tolerance is accepted by 99.99 percent of Americans. But there’s a huge cultural divide on the issue of homosexuality, and the school district here is mimicking gay activists’ platitudes in response to this. There’s no respect for people who oppose homosexual behavior."
Words to which someone who's been frozen in time since 1947 thaws out and replies:
"Wait, what? Racial tolerance is accepted by 99.9 percent of Americans? Dear Lord, the world has changed! But then again, I guess societies have a history of wising up and seeing the err of past ways. But wow, I must say that the idea of racial parity is shocking to me, as in my day, such a notion seemed light years away! Why, next your gonna tell me women have careers!"
Hey Pete: it's inequality pushes in general that we're equating with "wrong," not one specific historical black mark that we're equating to the one currently being lived.
