Like Batman answering his bat signal, the ACLU once again responds to a gay teen in crisis
The ACLU has announced that they'll help yet another student start up yet another Gay-Straight Alliance at yet another Southern high school (this time Danielle Smiley of North Carolina's Currituck County High). But to save you the effort of actually following this story, we'll just go ahead and give you an outline of how the fight will inevitably play out:
- Student sees a need or G-SA and makes proposal
- Many faculty members/school board officials/ community members oppose and make hurtful statements about "recruitment" and "immoral lifestyles"
- ACLU steps in
- In a last ditch effort to thwart the club, school tries to do something radical like cancel all extracurricular activities
- Case is ultimately ruled in the G-SA's favor, as even a staunchly conservative judge would have a hard time finding the rational basis to deny such a club
- Administration reluctantly allows club
- Society doesn't end
We'll keep you posted on any variances from this common formula, unless of course the anti-gays' claims come to fruition and society really does come to a close. After all, we'd imagine it'd be hard to write if totality was terminated.
