Like the human embodiment of the Jersey ruling, Hillary supports us...almost fully

Picture 2-34At a meeting of the Greater Voices Coalition -- an alliance made up of progressive NYC LGBT political organizations -- Senator Hillary Clinton reportedly indicated that her views on gay marriage had "evolved" in the years since her 2000 campaign. And while it seems she basically supported her "civil unions only" stance at last night's meeting, she did indicate that she would not oppose the efforts of the state's likely next governor, Eliot Spitzer, to legalize same-sex marriage in the Empire State. Reports Gay City News:

...Larry Moss, who as a Democratic state committeeman led the charge for the state party's endorsement of marriage equality, raised the issue with specific reference to politics in Albany. Noting that Spitzer, if elected governor, plans to introduce a "program bill" legalizing gay marriage as a sign of his commitment to the issue, Moss asked, "How do we keep your words from being cover for conservative Democrats who want to compromise with Eliot and say, 'Just do civil unions?'"

Clinton's response was probably the evening's most newsworthy moment.

"My position is consistent," she said. "I support states making the decision. I think that Chuck Schumer would say the same thing. And if anyone ever tried to use our words in any way, we'll review that. Because I think that it should be in the political process and people make a decision and if our governor and our Legislature support marriage in New York, I'm not going to be against that... So I feel very comfortable with being able to refute anybody who tries to pit us or pit me against Eliot."

Asked several moments later by Gary Parker, the Greater Voices leader who chaired the meeting, to clarify that point, Clinton reiterated, "I am not going to speak out against, I'm not going to oppose anything that the governor and the Legislature do."

So, okay -- she's on Spitzer's side and will support his pro-gay marriage position, even if she won't lead the charge herself. That's something. Though it'd certainly be much more refreshing if our Dem leaders would just cut out this bizarre, unnecessary semantics debate and start backing gays' freedom to MARRY, the only form of equality that is truly equal to heterosexual matrimony.

But we'll give her some time. After all, she's "evolving," that Hillary! And unlike many of those who oppose our marriage rights, we give much credence to the theory of evolution.
