Proud moments in baseless extremism: AFA encourages post-Turkey Day Wal-Mart truancy

The folks at the American Family Association are encouraging their followers to boycott Wal-Mart on the two days following Thanksgiving (traditionally the busiest Holiday shopping days of the year) because they say:

In a show of support to help homosexuals legalize same-sex marriage, Wal-Mart has agreed to automatically donate 5% of online sales directly to the Washington DC Community Center for Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender People. The cash donation will come from ALL online purchases made at Wal-Mart through the homosexual group's Web site. This move follows Wal-Mart's joining the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and agreeing to give generous financial help to that group.

Every purchase made online for books, music, videos, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, and electronics at the site will automatically send 5% of the sales to the homosexual group.

With this agreement, Wal-Mart made clear their support for the homosexual movement was a total commitment to the cause.

But here's the thing: You have to actually follow a link on the D.C. center's website to the retail giant's online home in order for Wal-Mart to donate any money to the GLBT group. It's simply an affiliate marketing program, through which various organizations can generate a commission from Wal-Mart online sales. Literally thousands of groups from all ideological walks of life are part of the program, and the D.C. Center is just one of them! As long as the group doesn't violate any of the prohibitions in the affiliate agreement, just about any credible organization is allowed to take part!

And how much has the link on the D.C. Center's site generated for the gay rights group? Well, as of November 11, the link has reportedly brought in a whopping $4.17!!!!!!! But, of course, it's far easier for the uber-reactionary, ultra-gay unfriendly AFA to just make it sound like Wal-Mart is partnering exclusively with a gay rights group, "taking sides in the culture war," and pulling in truckloads of cash for the "gay agenda." Already fed up with the retail mega-store for partnering with the National Gay And Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and selling the Brokeback Mountain DVD, the AFA is now seizing on any Wal-Mart company policy that they perceive to be too gay-friendly, as they try and bully the retail giant into standing with them in opposition to the gay community. They are trying to make an example out of Wal-Mart (just as they've done with Ford), in order to demonstrate the power of the "pro-family" dollar and to show that they WILL NOT TOLERATE corporate gay acceptance. It is beyond disgusting!

Even if Wal-Mart WAS donating a portion of EVERY PURCHASE to the fight for LGBT equality, they wouldn't deserve a boycott; they would deserve praise! But in actuality, they are simply ALLOWING an LGBT organization to be among the numerous groups who participate in an online affiliate program! For this simple reason, the AFA is trying to financially wound a retailer during the busiest quarter of their business year! And why the Hell not? After all, Wal-Mart maybe, possibly, kind of, sort of seems to not hate gays, and that is a stance the AFA simply cannot allow!


Usually we declare the AFA's anti-gay boycotts to be ignorant, mean-spirited, discriminatory, frighteningly extremist, indecent, short-sighted, and patently offensive. With this particular case, however, we can safely add to that list of descriptors: "So eye-openingly unwarranted, even Fred Phelps is probably like, 'Hey, give the gays a break'!"
