Conan's ridiculousness condemned even more ridiculously

Picture 1-52-1Some "pro-family" Christian activists are up in arms over a bit that recently aired on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," in which a character called "the homophobic country western singer" sang the lyrics:

Oh I love you Jesus
But only as a friend.
You touched my heart but I hope
That's where the touchin' ends.

You're always lookin' over me
When I need a higher power.
But you better look at somethin' else
When I'm in the shower.

Teehee. However, the folks at WorldNetDaily aren't laughing, with them even going so far as to say that the "late-night skit blatantly mocks Christianity by portraying Jesus as a homosexual voyeur." This despite the fact that bit actually only portrays the singer as a dumb*ss! O'Brien even acknowledged the character's ridiculousness by saying pre-song: "Our last new character's heart is in the right place, even if he's a complete idiot." But that still leaves questions in the mind of Douglas R. Scott Jr., the man who tipped WorldNet off to the bit in the first place, who says:

"We wonder if O'Brien's description of the character as a 'complete idiot' is based on the man's 'homophobic' beliefs or if it is because of the inference that Jesus could be sexually interested in seeing the man naked," Scott said. "I don't know if the man is a complete idiot, but I do suspect that the writer of the segment is a complete bigot."

Whoa, harsh words! Especially when the foolishness they are mocking is clearly the idea that one could be so homophobic that they feel a need to define the boundaries of their love for Jesus. And the bit is saying nothing about Jesus' attractions, much less portraying him as a "homosexual voyeur!" Regardless of Mr. O'Brien or the writer's personal thoughts of homophobia, the bit stands alone as a satirical commentary on the stereotype of the lengths to which some people will go to defend their heterosexuality, using the vehicle of a country western singing Christian to make the point. And why a country singer or a Christian? Well, because quite frankly, both communities have the stereotypical image of being less-than-gay-friendly. "The homophobic atheist folk singer," while a potentially hysterical conceit, would have served these purposes far less ably.

This is not an example of anti-Christian bigotry, but rather a man who makes comedic commentary for a living just doing his job. The issue of gay marriage and homophobia is unavoidable for those who track cultural trends! Christians are inarguably leading the fight to keep gays from obtaining the equality they seek! If anti-gay Christians don't like the exaggerated caricature that their role in this issue has informed, then perhaps they should question their bias, not those who hold a mirror up to the scenario.

**Oh, and until we get a clip of the above bit, this will serve as a nice placeholder:
