She has distaste for 'p*ssies,' but Silverman loves the gays

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 7-37In an interview with Out magazine, comedian Sarah Silverman says of marriage:

"The people -- both the Republicans and the pussy Democrats -- that won't stand up for gay rights have made the idea of marriage ugly to me."

We tell you this, of course, because we love to point out any political quote that uses the word "p*ssy." But beyond our affection for such sound bites, we also show this this because Silverman highlights an overlooked facet of the "war on gay marriage," which is that there are loads of straight allies who feel that their own right to marry has been greatly devalued by the social conservatives. There are scores of heterosexual folks who don't see marriage as only a child-centric, religious-specific, hallowed, God-mandated, sanctimonious institution, but rather a contract entered into by two loving individuals who have pledged a life together. Such straight allies are just as insulted by the narrow definitions that our opposition has placed on marriage as we are!

What Silverman's quote also highlights is that this "fight" is not one in which gay individuals should be expected to fight alone. At the end of the day, the religious conservatives have been working non-stop not only to keep people like this writer legally single, but also to exalt their views on life to a place of moral prominence. They are sending the message to everyone that their religious freedom and right to use their belief to discriminate deserves greater respect than other liberties and faith ideas. That is a message not only dangerous to gay couples, but also to society at large. The response to the message needs to come from all sides, not just those of us who are most personally affronted by it!

Silverman's currently experiencing a career surge with a heightened profile. We applaud folks like herself, as well as celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have used their celebrity to make a gay-positive social statement. If we are to rise up and move past this historical pockmark, we need support. We need our heterosexual pals to realize that this is not just one of the biggest travesties or liberty ever to be directed at gay people, but rather of the greatest bastardizations of freedom to ever be directed towards equality-loving America! Here's hoping those with the platforms to make such an impact will come out in even greater numbers to fight not for gay rights, but rather for human fariness.

Your thoughts

Good for the social conservatives. Gay marriage is disgusting and offensive to God. We'll keep you single as long as we have any say in it.
