Mellencamp fine with 'Pink Houses,' not just 'Jack & Diane'

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 2-67From the latest issue of Blender magazine comes this quote from John Mellencamp:

"I believe in a higher being. You can call it what you want. But I don't believe the Bible was written as a book of history, and I don't believe in organized religion. The thing that gets me is all these people are so intolerant of homosexuals. You really gotta look hard to find anything bad about homosexuals in the Bible. But goddamn: When it comes to killin', that's all over the place, and nobody gives a shit. "Let's kill soldiers, let's kill Iraqis, let's kill Germans, let's kill everybody!" But, man, you try to love somebody of your own sex and you're going straight to hell."

Wow! And suddenly we're forced to reconsider those Mellencamp-laden Chevy commercials through which we always quickly fast forward. Maybe next time we encounter one, we'll slow it down a bit so that we'll have time to proudly declare to the room, "Hey, this dude's pretty cool," before quickly speeding off to see who is still in the running towards becoming America's next top model.

Here's also hoping that General Pete Pace reads Blender.
