Old case of rumored, wretched political opportunism gets new fuel

Picture 11-35In his new book, No Excuses, former Kerry campaign strategist Bob Shrum reportedly corroborates a widely-circulated Newsweek story from 2004, wherein it was claimed that former president Bill Clinton had suggested that Kerry should back gay marriage bans in order to enhance his '04 electability. This from The Politico:

A version of this story is already in print. In 2004, Newsweek reported, without a named source, that Bill Clinton had suggested Kerry "to back local bans on gay marriage."

Shrum has more, and different, detail:
...
"Kerry, Clinton ventured, should consider defying Democratic interest groups by endorsing the Bush proposal for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage."

Shrum reports that "this was a flip-flop too far for Kerry."

It's also worse in Shrum's version — the federal amendment, versus state amendments -- than in Newsweek's telling. And Bill Clinton does, reportedly, continue to play a small role in Hillary's campaign.

Clinton2Hmm..so was Bill "don't ever forget I signed DOMA" Clinton really ready to screw the gays in order to save the election? Even more frightening to consder: Is f***ing with gay equality truly what would have given Kerry the edge?! And what does this mean for Hillary, who has been talking a fairly good gay game, yet still leaves much to desire in terms of marriage equality?

Well, we don't have the answers. But we know who does: THE CLINTONS! And we actually sort of hope this blows up into a big story so that either or both will be forced to frankly address it.

But then again, this is politics -- isn't actually cutting the bullsh*t and getting direct, non-soundbite-laden answers just for hippies and humanitarians?
