Eureka! Small AR town beings DP registration

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 9-37Last month, we told you how the city council of Eureka Springs, AR, has voted to set up a domestic partnership registry. Well, we're happy to report that as of 9:30 this morning, the small town has begun registering couples for the mostly ceremonial arrangements:

Eureka Springs Begins Registering Couples [THV]

Now, as we mentioned before, the DP registry will not actually grant the couples any legal rights in and of themselves, and they are not even legally binding. However, we're talking about a state that passed its gay marriage ban by a 75%-25% margin! ANY stride to help recognize gay couples (no matter how small the town or how baby the step) is certainly a move in the right direction.

So mazel tov, Eureka Springs gays! May you all live to see the day when those contracts for which you are registering will carry some actual benefits and protections!

Your thoughts

There are worse places than Arkansas (my birth state). Florida (my current home state) is far more red and doesn't even allow gay adoptions or foster parenting. Arkansas at least allows those.

Thanks for the well wishes and reporting. Eureka is a happy place to be. Some of the businesses are offering specials to couples coming for a DP. Can I say that here? The specials and other news is on the Eureka Gay News site.

I don't understand. People was to fight DP's but not fight divorce?
