Focus unconcerned with our concerns?
Despite our emailing several employees within the organization (many of whom have corresponded with us many times in the past), and despite the readers who have emailed us to say they've done the same, the folks at Focus on the Family still have the words "dyke," "flamer," and "fag" in the meta tags of their spinoff site, TroubledWith.com. This is beyond offensive!
Yes, we get that they are using these words to attract those who use these offensive terms in their website searches (the explanation they gave us when they pulled the tags back in '05). But we can't help but wonder -- would a site opposed to interracial marriage get such a pass should they use "the N word" in their coding? Would a site opposed to equality for women feel so comfortable using words like "bitch"? Would a staunchly pro-Christian site get a pass for using anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim epithets, even if they said they were doing so simply to attract traffic?
Well, who knows. We do know that nobody should feel comfortable using words like "dyke," "flamer" and "fag" as a means to attract traffic. Focus is a group who opposes gay rights at every turn, yet denies they are "haters" or "bigots." Why then are they so eager to attract those who are?!?! We understand the traffic hustle, but we also understand decent business practices (especially for companies that stake a claim to the moral high ground). You can't cite a need for hits to justify your verbal hits!!
We'll keep trying to make contact.
