Much ado about typesetting

In their nonstop attempt to make John Edwards look weak by ascribing feminine/weak/gay attributes to the Dem candidate's character (think Coulter and her "f*ggot" slur), some social conservatives are now making a big issue (no pun intended) about the following Esquire magazine cover:

Picture 7-61

Specifically, they are pointing out the words above Edwards' head reading "Sexiest Woman Alive." Despite the fact that there is clearly an arrow pointing at a woman in lingerie, many conservatives are finding it just hysterical that these words appear in such close proximity to the White House would-be. Hell, the extremely anti-gay folks at WorldNetDaily find it so "newsworthy," they are discussing the magazine cover as an "exclusive," above the title, bannered story (as of 9AM):

BREAKING!!!! EXCLUSIVE!!!!! MAGAZINES HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF SPACE ON THEIR COVER ON WHICH TO INCLUDE THEIR COPY! THEY RELY ON THE READER TO DISCERN WHICH WORDS GO WITH WHICH PHOTOS! WorldNet: We understand slow news days (thus the reason why we're talking about this in the first place), but seriously -- isn't there some heterosexual marriage being attacked somewhere that you guys need to cover?!

And then there are some like the conservative blog 'Say Anything,' who have simply cropped out the image of the actual woman, instead running this photo:

Edwards(2)

Because why make things more transparent when you can crop out clarity-providing image to more easily make your jokes?

But seriously -- is this really funny? Or at all newsworthy? Or ANYTHING other than just an attempt to say "Edwards = womanly = therefore weak"? While not really gay in content, something about this whole thing makes us just a little disgusted.

In their EXCLUSIVE!! BREAKING!! piece, WorldNet says the following:

But the pièce de résistance for some on the issue of which candidate is the most feminine comes with the August cover story on Edwards. Purposely or inadvertently, above Edwards cover photo appear the words: "The Sexiest Woman Alive." The headline promotes another story in the magazine, but the juxtopositioning amid the controversy between Clinton and Edwards struck some as astonishing.

"I can't wait to see if Ann Coulter brings this up in one of her columns," wrote one poster to a popular weblog.

Controversy? There's seriously a controversy over who's more of a "woman," Clinton or Edwards? Uhm, sorry WND, but just like the idea that this magazine cover is worthy of any sort of discussion, the "John's a chick" controversy would seem to exist only in the heads of those who think attractive, in-touch men are automatically effeminate, which essentially makes them women, which clearly makes them weak!

Although we are sure Johnny boy is flattered to be deemed the "sexiest." Now THAT is where the mini dress-loving, leg-baring Coulter might take issue!

Is John Edwards 'sexiest woman alive'? [WND]

Your thoughts

That cover really is badly designed.
