Just like 'Cat Fancy' needn't host a speaker who detests pussies

by Jeremy Hooper

Good As You Images Right Images LabarberaNote to Peter LaBarbera: If you would actually admit that your words and actions are intolerant, discriminatory, mean-sprited, then you would understand WHY folks would be uncomfortable having you on a diversity discussion panel. However, since you and your buddies have so thoroughly bought your own "pro-family" press, it's no surprise that you view those who keep you off such panels as "anti-Christian" bigots.

We say this because Peter is currently making the rounds, trying to make it look as if he was recently kicked off a DiversityInc magazine panel because of the left's "twisted" version of tolerance, and not his own cruel and divisive rhetoric. Here is the back story in his own words:

Today I was scheduled to fly to Newark, N.J., to participate in a “Religion in the Workplace Roundtable” discussion sponsored by DiversityInc Magazine. But I won’t be going to Newark – because three of the panelists decided that true diversity was something they simply could not tolerate.

On Friday, I received an awkward call from Barbara Frankel, DiversityInc’s Executive Editor, who had originally invited me to take part in the roundtable — along with Daryl Herrschaft, Director of the Workplace Project at Human Rights Campaign, a homosexual activist group, and several other panelists including the president of American Atheists.

An embarrassed Ms. Frankel said she was forced to disinvite me, less than a week before the event, because Herrschaft and two other panelists (she wouldn’t say whom) had threatened not to come if I were allowed to participate. (I had already bought my airline ticket and received planning materials for the discussion.) Ironically, one of the proposed questions for the roundtable was: “How do you balance the need to create an open and equal workplace for LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] employees with the religious beliefs of those who oppose same-sex relationships?”

Frankel apologized and said that she was very upset about this development, but that her hands were tied. Of course, she could have stuck with the original plan and told Herrschaft and his two allies to take a hike, or at least a refresher course on genuine diversity.

And then Peter goes on to say that "many powerful homosexual groups, would rather demonize pro-family Christians and social conservatives than debate them," and he proceeds to paint HRC's opposition to his appearance as "morailty-ophobia." But here's the thing he forgets: Peter LaBarbera spends his every waking day spouting vitriolic statements about the gay community, passing off stereotypes, half-truths, false research, junk science, flawed talking points, and myopic Biblical interpretation, as he diligently works to make it seem as if a "moral" world is a gay-less one! He fosters the "pro-family" lie that gays can and should "change." He uses hateful words like "she-males" to describe the transgender community. Hell, he'll even exploit a gay man's death for his own gain. He is not encouraging diversity; he is forcing one particular group to have to fight for their own acceptance in the world's spectrum!

The far-right has done a stellar job in painting this "culture war" debate as if it is one where all sides' arguments deserve equal credence. And they have done a bang up job making it sound as if "Christian" and "gay-unfriendly" are synonymous terms. But the simple facts are (a) a belief in Jesus does not equate a disdain for two dudes smooching, and (b) those who refuse to view gays as normal and acceptable are working towards the sort of heterogeneity in which hetero is the only acceptable sexual orientation! THEY DON'T WANT GAYS AS PART OF SOCIETY, plain and simple. If it were not for their attempts to muck with the natural order of things -- and gays, despite what they want you to believe, are part of that natural order -- then gay activists would have not one ounce of antipathy for their personal religious freedom (no matter how much we disagreed). In fact, if they all were to stop their socio-religo-political games, there would be no more need for gay activism at all, as without the anti-gay beast being fed, it would die off within a generation! Because bigotry is what is truly learned and chosen, not homosexuality.

The thing about Pete's booting is this: If the panel on which Mr. LaBarbera was originally scheduled to speak was sponsored by Time magazine, then we would understand and even possibly support his objections. Such publications should honor everyone's viewpoints, and the version of religion that fanatically condemns gays would deserve an equal representation on a religious panel. But instead, we are talking about DiversityInc, a publication dedicated to diversity in the workplace. And we are talking about a man who is quite forcibly fostering the problem, not working towards a solution.

Your thoughts

Oh, Hi Porno Pete!

Just left you from Exgaywatch.com. So how you doin?

To answer the question (and I'm so sure this is what Mr LaBarbera would have said): “How do you balance the need to create an open and equal workplace for LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] employees with the religious beliefs of those who oppose same-sex relationships?”

You don't. Just like you don't try to balance the need to create an open and equal workplace for ethnic minorities with the beliefs of those who are cloak carrying KKK members.

I'm with Jessica. Of course, I'm not sure what there is to balance in the first place. People are allowed to believe same-sex relationships are not okay. They are not entitled to a workplace free of gay people any more than I'm entitled to a workplace free of fundamentalist Christians.

I just had some e-mail exchanges with Peter about ENDA I thought I would share them with you:

From: Alonzo

If ENDA is unfair to the faithful, then why not go all the way - Don't hire adulterers don't hire liars, don't hire people who've been divorced, don't hire people who've had sex outside of marriage and don't hire Christians who have yet to be born again.

I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.

From: AmericansForTruth

Alonzo, if there were an Adulterers Task Force, you'd bet I'd oppose it.

From: Alonzo

If you do in fact oppose adultery the same as you do homosexuality - then why didn't you request the resignation of Senator David Vitter as you did for Senator Larry Craig?

From: AmericansForTruth

In an interview, I did. We focus on homosexuality, Alonzo. You know that. I was very happy when the Republican Senator from Arkansas a few years back LOST his reelection after having an affair with his secretary (I think)

From: Alonzo

Yes but Peter you're also a Christian who believes in forgiveness - Larry Craig was a man who supported the Federal Marriage Amendment, he voted against hate crime laws that covered sexual orientation - even with his guilty plea nothing sexual actual happen however your side just feed him to the dogs where was the forgiveness?

I wasn't talking about the Senator from Arkansas - I was talking about Senator David Vitter who is still in the U.S. Senate a married man who used the services of a prostitute, the only reason I brought him up is because you said you were equally opposed to adultery.

I just find it odd that these 2 men and I'm sure there are more who by their own actions destroy their own families yet they support laws that are set up to protect American families from people like me.

My point as I said before to deny a person a job or to fire someone based on what someone believes to be a sin -Then Homosexuals shouldn't be the only ones.

From: AmericansForTruth

Alonzo, so what you're telling me is that you're shocked by hypocrites? From a liberty perspective I believe a guy should be able to fire either someone practicing homosexual or adultery -- if it's his business and he finds them objectionable and a sign of bad character -- what do you think? An the same token, I don't think a gay bar owner is going to be hiring me!

From: Alonzo

Peter if you wanted to work at a gay bar and was deny employment because you are a Christian I would be the first one to send you a check to pay any legal bills you would have suing that bar for discrimination.

From: AmericansForTruth

OK, but I don't have a "right" to work at a gay bar. Why should I? What about the liberty of the bar owner?

Under Federal law, employers cannot discriminate against employees on the basis of religion.

So from my understanding of the law you would have every right to seek employment at a gay bar.

Now if you were hired at a gay bar and you begin to preach against the sin of homosexuality - the owner should have every right to fire you. The same right I believe a faith based business should be allowed to fire an employee if their behavior or perceived behavior proved to be disruptive to that business’ image.

Peter I understand that you want to live in an America were everyone lives a life based on Judeo-Christian principles – however it’s never going to happen unless Jesus himself returns and makes that happen.

I on the other hand I want to live in an America were we all can learn to tolerate one another not accept or forced to accept just tolerate each other regardless of their race, faith, gender or sexual orientation.

But as we both know the two of us talking isn’t going to end the “culture war” anytime soon.

Posted by: Alonzo | Sep 21, 2007 4:31:43 PM

Well, hopefully nobody wants a workplace free of ANY particular type of sect. We do, however, want a workplace free from inequality. And by his protests against things like DP benefits and ENDA, Pete is encouraging such inequality for LGBT people.

I agree with you, Alonzo. I was just using that as a coutner-example to try and demonstrate how silly the whole idea is.

Oops, my last comment should've been addressed to G-A-Y. Sorry about that.

I really wish your fucked country would just piss of and die.

Unfortunately the religious bigoted crap that shits out of the USA ( Ulserated Sphincter of Anus) feeds the bigots over here on their TV's whether religious or not.

Now, UK Bishops with their bollocks have to attend US Bishops with zero bollocks to stop the African Bishops full of serious deadly bollocks in order to persue church
appeasment.

Day by day, as a western "consumer", I am bombarded with adverts asking me to help a wee African Child in Zimbabwe. All covered by a weepie tune.

The UK and USA Govts give billions to these people, and it all gets corrupted. Mugabe etc..

Iran + Gay. Death by Hanging. See YouTube.
Gay and Zimbabwe = Death by Hanging. See YouTube.

Point is, these countries having been shafted with all the bloody missionaries who corrupted their natural progression with religious crap.
