Pete fails to see that time's progression is his side's unbeatable foe
Finally, Peter LaBarbera is admitting that his side has the wrong focus. Sadly, however, it's not that he's frealized that their anti-gay actions are inhumane and discriminatory. It's just that he thinks by focusing so much on marriage, his team has lost sight of their far-reaching, blanket condemnation of all things queer. This from One News Now:
Peter LaBarbera, founder of the website RepublicansforFamilyValues.com, says the pro-family side is "losing momentum" in the homosexuality debate. "It seems like we've put almost all of our eggs in the 'stopping gay marriage basket,' which is important; but the result is that there is less focus on a principled position on homosexuality -- which is voting 'no' on any sexual orientation legislation," he says. "[It's] the idea that we always reject any vote, any bill or law which tries to say that you should grant civil rights based on homosexual practice."
The activist says no conservative should be voting in favor of legislation such as ENDA, and that ENDA is one of the most radical pieces of legislation to "come down the pike." LaBarbera says the defection of 13 Republicans to the side of the Human Rights Campaign on ENDA was also due to the fact that the legislation was "off the radar" of the secular conservative talk-radio circuit.
"I think we have a lot of education to do on our side," he shares, "and I think we need to come back to the main issue, which is homosexuality is not a civil right."
Oh, Peter. Peter, Peter, Peter. Your side's problem is not that you've put all your eggs in the gay marriage basket. It's that you aggressively place any couple for whom egg and sperm production is not a reality in a hellbound handbasket! And you certainly DO have lots of education to do on your side. But it's not on the "unrighteousness" of measures like ENDA. It's on the simple fact that the spectrum of normalcy includes LGBT people!
So while it's nice that you're rethinking all of the time you have wasted by dedicating your career to encouraging inequality, Pete, it's all for naught until you fix the truly broken aspect. That would be the mindset that tries to deny people of their truths in order to fit the narrow mold that's been cast by years of religious persecution. And until that splinter is fully yanked from the judgmental finger, peace will never come to this little realm that we like to call reality.
