CNN: The most trusted name in outing?
Regarding the news that Jodie Foster thanked "my beautiful Cydney" at a recent awards ceremony, CNN is today running this headline:
Now, those of us in the gay world know that Jodie's been rumored to be with a woman by the name of Cydney Bernard since 1993, so when we heard about this speech, many of us naturally assumed that this was the "beautiful Cydney" being thanked in Jodie's speech. But how do we feel about a news outlet like CNN making that leap when Jodie does not, at this point, seem to have confirmed it? Especially when you consider this a network that employs Jodie's male counterpart in the "Which Celebrity is Gay?" parlor game:
If Anderson were to thank a dude who he's been linked to in the gossip mill -- and there have been a few potential suitors who have been put forth by name -- would the network eschew actual journalism and proceed to present his gayness as fact? Or a better question: SHOULD they?
Look, this writer has very little doubt that Jodie was thanking anyone other than her lesbian partner when she thanked her "beautiful Cydney." And when gossiping with friends, I'd probably state it with a fair amount of certainty that Jodie took a step towards acknowledging her reality. But the fact remains that she didn't come out and say it. And as one who prefers accuracy in the media (from all sides), I'm a wee bit uncomfortable with CNN being so quick to jump towards the definitive.
That all being said: What the hell took you so long, Jodester?
