The demons with Ennis

by Jeremy Hooper

Well this sure didn't take long:

Picture 28-6

"Tacky bucket of slime seasoned with vomit," huh? Funny, we always assumed that vomit would be the main course and slime the elected condiment. The heartiness of the former would seem to be what would necessitate a sturdy plate or a bowl, while the latter would seem to be like a gravy one would slap on to give the puke a little somethin-somethin' (much like ketchup, mustard, or monkey pus). But hey, with all the slimey regurgitate that Westboro's serves up over the decades, who are we to question their expertise?

R.I.P. Heath.

Your thoughts

Dear members of the media,
STOP giving this fringe group of lunatics a platform to spread their message of hate. You're actually helping their 'cause'. Thanks.

Dear anonymous commenter,
Westboro is not going to go anywhere. Their antics are going to garner attention. We choose to confront them head on rather than cowering in fear. And in the process, it shows the American public just how heated the anti-gay rhetoric can get. Thanks.

these psychos will burn in hell. can't somebody make them "disappear"? anyway, it's not like anyone will let these inbred rednecks know the details of the funeral--which may be in australia where his family is--so let them waste their fucktard time.

Posted by: tina | Jan 23, 2008 10:25:14 AM

Don't be so sure, tina. They are very resourceful in terms of locating funerals, and they don't care about forking over the cash to fly themselves across the globe.

I hope people start throwing rotten fruit and veggies at them and otherwise make these awful people miserable. That's what we did in San Francisco when they came to try to picket Randy Shilts's celebration of life at Glide Memorial Church. They showed up, began to jump up and down in apparent glee, and then some dyke in the back of the very large crowd of several hundred flung a rotten tomato, and then there were volleys of fruits and veggies flung at 'em, and they literally turned tail and ran out of San Francisco. Such nasty hatefulness must be confronted peacefully and creatively, but it must be confronted. Health Ledger - and all of the others that these bastards have picketed - deserves to be remembered in dignity and in honor.

Posted by: James | Jan 23, 2008 10:39:33 AM

man, this truly saddens me.

I know they want attention; but the fact that I admired Heath Ledger as an actor and he was only 28 makes it so much worse.

I hope those people get what's coming to them, ignorant religious fanatics.

Posted by: Josh | Jan 23, 2008 10:47:13 AM

Let's go people.....let's take them on. I don't think they know who they're dealing with.....let's send those hateful people to hell sooner than anyone imagined. Let's get some big numbers to show up and protest in their faces....we've got nothing to lose.

Posted by: Susan | Jan 23, 2008 10:47:25 AM

I hope the funeral is in Australia. The Aussies can kick their asses. Hopefully they won't realize that the first amendment doesn't help them down there until its too late. I would love to see their bloody faces in the news somewhere. >:-)

I doubt these "people" will be able to afford the airfare to Australia where Mr. Ledger will surely be buried. Obviously they are too stupid to know where he is from.

Posted by: Clint | Jan 23, 2008 10:55:15 AM

I don't think the Phelps clan has a lot of money. When they were sued a few months back, I seem to recall that they had a substantial amount of debt that they declared. However, we can all look forward to the day when we can picket Fred Phelps's funeral. Hopefully it's just around the corner.

Posted by: Johnny | Jan 23, 2008 11:20:51 AM

Phelps knows he's gay right?

Posted by: Ando | Jan 23, 2008 11:33:02 AM

Can Phelps even afford to fly to Australia? Jesus, he's going to be maimed by a streetful of aussie rules football hooligans. That will be priceless! DIE PHELPS, DIE.

Is the picture of Freddy used in the article meant to convey an anti-gay, masculine countenance? If so, it failed miserably. The picture depicts a Bee Gee's sort of persona, hardly a "He man" sort of look. Actually, he looks more like the gay men he so incessantly bleats about. Poor, poor, pitiful Freddy. It must be hard to admit you're about as relevant as Ted "Truly" Haggard, Mark "Get me a boy- any boy" Foley, and of course, everyone's favorite hypocrite, Dick No-Brainy Cheney who disacknowledges gays, to the exclusion of his own daughter. So, it's unacceptable to be gay unless you're a Vice President's daughter?

Johnyy: They certainly don't have a ton of money (at least that they report). However, a large part of what they DO have is put to their traveling costs. Keep in mind that they have been doing these pickets on a semi-regular basis for almost two decades, and have been on an almost daily schedule over the past few years.

While their are countless ways to criticize them, their resources, intelligence, and determination are not the easiest to scrutinize.

Posted by: G-A-Y | Jan 23, 2008 12:14:21 PM

What picture, Mark-Alan?

Posted by: G-A-Y | Jan 23, 2008 12:18:20 PM

A guy on DailyKos the other day "stalled" his car (hazard lights and everything) in front of a WBC funeral protest and blasted punk music in front of them so no one could hear them. A bunch of other people spontaneously had "car trouble" and joined in with their favorite loud music!

Posted by: rhetoricus | Jan 23, 2008 12:21:42 PM

Look at this guy. He is as gay as a gay guy can get. He is in such deep denial of who he is and he is projecting. That's the funny part about all of this - Fred Phelps is totally gay!

Posted by: skr | Jan 23, 2008 12:22:03 PM

I'd like to know how they'll get to Australia since they have money they owe in MD. But Hell, OJ still lives the high life. So I guess Fred Phelps getting to Australia isn't out of the question. Maybe some Aussies will take these scumbags out for us.

Posted by: Fred Furney | Jan 23, 2008 12:26:43 PM

WBC- what is that? White Borish Christians? When, oh when, will the media cease giving these knuckle-draggers column space? I truly believe that in this case, ignoring the problem will make it go away.

Posted by: Dynamo Dave | Jan 23, 2008 12:33:42 PM

DD: We've already addressed the "giving them column space" question in a previous comment. But basically it's a matter of confronting a problem that is not going to go away vs. ignoring it. We believe that pointing out the nuttiness is eye-opening, and therefore productive.

Also, it's a little annoying for those of us in the gay community when we hear people say that the problem will go away if we ignore it. It's not a recent, modern problem. Well before ANYONE in the media took notice, they were picketing OUR funerals and OUR events for years. And the lack of attention didn't make them go away -- it made them raise their rhetoric and extend it to the heterosexual population, knowing that oftentimes in this world, things are not deemed an issue until they affect non-minority populations.

To those people refering to the handsome photo (in Raw Story's headline box). That is Heath!. Fred scum Phelps is a mouldering old fart with warty raggedy wrinkled skin and hideous looks (Picture Gollum on a good day). The WBC is a worm-infested collection of evolutionary rejects, all homely as their spawning mass of bacterial colonies, Phred. And watch this old fool. He is also aligning with the masses of Russian Evenaglical immigrants, many of whom have taken up his Banner of Hate and Persicution, giving gay and ethnic communities around California and the US headaches and even KILLING! They are a dangerous bunch. Religious? Like dog turds.

Posted by: JAG | Jan 23, 2008 12:50:24 PM

I happen to agree with Phelps' flyer.

Matt from California - please kill yourself.

You're absolutely right, GAY. We can't ignore these hatemongers, we must fight them. There's a group of bikers (ex-military or currently serving) who ride escort at military funerals with the idea of protecting the deceased's family from contact with the Phelps. Perhaps Dykes on Bikes would like to provide the same service for GLBTQ funerals? It would be a trip, wouldn't it, having the very studly DOB get in the Phelpses faces? I'd pay money to see that.

Posted by: thepoliticalcat | Jan 23, 2008 2:27:24 PM

By posting WBC’s stupidity it seems to have allowed other people to respond with their own stupidity i.e. "Phelps knows he's gay right?" or "DIE PHELPS, DIE"

Josh Kilmer-Purcell of OUT has truly shown one of the best ways we can deal with the WBC.

Fuck me, Daddy!

Posted by: Brucie | Jan 23, 2008 2:55:32 PM

I was predicting as much in my weblog.

And how's this for another effective weapon against the so-called "Westboro Baptist Church:" Playing a reechy-sounding, ear-splitting rendition of "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" (apartheid South Africa's National Hymn) just to see the reaction of his pseudoreligious droogs to such a paean to flawed national policy.

Posted by: Iludium Phosdex | Jan 23, 2008 3:45:15 PM

With Westboro always quoting the bible how come they always seem to skip over Matt.Ch.7 1st. verse or 1st.Corinthians Ch.1 verses 26-29.
In doing so I think they clearly show what their about.

Posted by: Dee | Jan 23, 2008 4:06:04 PM

Hopefully there are hate crime laws in Australia, if that is in fact where the funeral takes place. Thanks to Canada's hate crime laws, Phelps has been barred from entering Canada because of his past anti-gay protests.

These freaks CRACK ME UP!! It will be unfortunate for people who are grieving Heath's passing, but he's gotta be laughing at these assholes while chillin' out in heaven. He's just gotta be!
