Oh brother: Conserv uses convenient title to make asinine connection
In a piece chastising ABC's "Brothers and Sisters" for recently airing a same-sex commitment ceremony, Kristen Fyfe of the Culture and Media Institute makes the following offensive connection between gays who pledged a lifetime of monogamy and siblings who schtup each other (highlighting our own):
Entertainment TV has long been a vehicle to bring controversial cultural topics into the living rooms of American families: Maude's abortion aired in 1972 before Roe v. Wade entered the cultural lexicon, Murphy Brown opted to have a baby out of wedlock, and homosexuality came into homes weekly via Will and Grace. Weddings – or commitment ceremonies – for gay main characters are the next step. Which almost makes the kiss shared between two male characters, one a soldier, on Thursday's Grey's Anatomy (another ABC series) no big deal.
Maybe "Brothers and Sisters" is the theme of the week for ABC. Earlier this week, on the news side of programming, the network's Good Morning America showcased a story on incest and the "taboo" love that a half-brother and sister share. (For more on that story, click here.) Edgy, non-traditional relationships and sexuality seem to be in the air at ABC these days. GMA has recently dealt with transgenderism, a pregnant "man," and the "gay gene."
And why wouldn't Ms. Fyfe make such a connection? Because to many social conservatives, anything outside their narrowly define realm of acceptability can just be thrown in a major pile of WRONG!" with little to no gradience on their scale of "immorality." A half-brother wants to f**k his sister? Eh, just toss that in the stack with the gays and the transgenders, they say. That way they can continue to make anything outside of married, man/woman, religious marriage look irrefutably unsavory, and the aforementioned "traditional couplings" seem irrefutably righteous.
Look, we think you have to hold a very short-sighted worldview to oppose marriage equality. However, when one goes so far as to link homosexuality with incest, the views have gone well past the realm of short-sighted and into the land of batsh*t crazy. Such linkings are not the words of a social conservative "defending" marriage. They are cruel attacks coming from a very real and very frightening place of anti-gay hostility.

Your thoughts
OMG MURPHY BROWN HAD A BABY OUT OF WEDLOCK? What the fudge has the world come to?
If anything, it shows what kind of backwards world these guys truly want.

Agreed. These people hide under the guise of "family focus" and "marriage protection" when they're truly just bigots who probably squirm when they see an interracial "coupling".
Also, they were BOTH soldiers on Grey's Anatomy. Take that, Kristen.

It's also worth pointing out that the incest they're talking about never happened. The two characters found out that they were not related in any way.

Who the frak is Murphy Brown?
I guess she could have had an abortion instead?

Mark, when have any of these fundies ever allowed the facts to get in their way of telling a good story?
