Debatably homophobic ad: Nike says shoo?

nike-ad-gayDue to raised eyebrows from some within the LGBT community, Nike will reportedly pull a series of print ads that featured crotch-on-face contact and an accompanying slogan implying that such contact "ain't right." Reuters has more:

Nike pulls ads on anti-gay concerns: report [Reuters]

No word on what the replacement ad campaign will look like. Though we predict we'll be wearing a pair of pride flag-hued Air Harvey Milks by Christmas.

Your thoughts

I don't know about these... They're accidents, and if the implication is that getting someone's crotch shoved in your face while trying to play basketball -- I'd agree "that ain't right". But if the implication that any crotch-face connection between any men for any reason "ain't right" I'd beg to differ.

Jason: Agreed, Jason. IMHO, these ads are not outwardly anti-gay. There is room for much discussion and varying opinion.

That being said, I understand and respect that others might find them offensive. And it is probably a good thing that Nike recognized the controversy and is making strides to alleviate concerns.

I'm so glad you said that because my personal interpretation of the ad and the response it's getting from other bloggers is that some people are just being way too sensitive.

Has HRC ever been around any black folks? I'm beginning to wonder. I originally heard the phrase "that ain't right" from some of my African-American friends years ago, so I'm going to assume the line originated from the black community.

When you can see a woman's cameltoe, or when somebody bends over and you can see the crack of their ass, or when somebody shoves their crotch in somebody's face - it usually elicits one of those friends quipping: "THAT AIN'T RIGHT!".

There's nothing directly homophobic about that.

HRC is pathetic, and I've been saying that for the longest time. They're wasting contributors money on silly shit. If it won't get them a moment in the spotlight (such as confronting the "ex-gays", which they NEED to be doing), so they can have a self-congratulatory tea party afterwards, it's not worth going after. Pathetic AND worthless.
