GLAAD-Newpaper Editors celebrate loving commitment

200808181116This happy announcement just came to us from the good folks at GLAAD:

Marking the six-year anniversary of its Announcing Equality campaign, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today announced that 1,049 daily U.S. newspapers now accept wedding announcements from gay and lesbian couples – a more than fifteen-fold increase since August 18, 2002, when The New York Times opened its Weddings/Celebrations pages to gay and lesbian couples following conversations with GLAAD leadership.

GLAAD's Announcing Equality Campaign Marks Six-Year Anniversary With Record 1,049 Inclusive Papers [GLAAD]

So let's see here: That's 1049 papers, times the number of subscribers of each, times 6 years. Let's cross multiply, carry the one, add 'em up. [::writer furiously moves pencil over paper::] Uhm... By our calculations, that's approximately 86,342,863 coffee rings that have been left on the faces of happily committed gay and lesbian couples. If that's not progress, we just don't know what is!

No word on when the We Profit From Taking Cheesy Photos of Smiling Couples Society will join GLAAD in celebrating this joyous upswing. But we, proud members of the We Sometimes Like To End Posts With Cheesy Puns Alliance, would expect their announcement in a flash.

Your thoughts

I love that the conversation has really shifted in the gay community (as well as the straight one) around same-sex couples. As a lesbian, I think we're finally viewed as actually WANTING to make commitments, not the promiscuous lust-driven people they've attempted to portray us as for so long.

Not that I'm not lust-driven. Ask my wife.

Got to run right now. But my little paper was listed as a no print last year and I complained to editor. He said that was NOT the papers policy. Will look at list when I can.
