VALUES VOTERS 2008: My parents went to 'Values Voters' and all I got was this offensive breakfast

by Jeremy Hooper

Over the past couple of days, we've been highlighting some of the less gay-friendly moments from this weekend's so-called Values Voters Summit. Well now, to close out our coverage, we want to show you an item that was reportedly selling like hotcakes at the Summit:

200809150716
Obama Waffles: Racial Stereotypes as Propaganda [The Improper]

Yes, that's right -- "Obama Waffles," with a box that portrays the Illinois Senator as both an Aunt Jemima-like caricature and a white turban wearer (Next to the slogan, "Point box towards Mecca for tastier waffles"), were being peddled at the anti-gay, anti-progressive, "loving Christian" celebration. A product that even the Family Research Council recognized as beyond the pale, with executive director David Nammo releasing a statement saying:

"We strongly condemn the tone and content of materials that were exhibited by one of the vendors at this weekend's Values Voter Summit. The materials represent an attempt at parody that crosses the line into coarseness and bias."

But of course as gays who, year after year, have witnessed the speakers at FRC's Values Voters Summit peddle coarseness and bias towards our existences, the fact that this sort of product could show up at the soiree surprises us not. We're just glad that the rest of the world is getting a glimpse at what sort of ideas are so frequently bubbling under the surface of the "pro-family" side.
