CA equality: The race to erase gets racial
Speaking to CBS News about the expected heightened turnout of African-American voters in California and the anti-gay benefit she sees in the same, Protect Marriage's Sonja Eddings Brown (the same spokesperson who seems to think Gavin Newsom spells his name with an 'e') has offered up the following thoughts:
"We thank Barack Obama, even though he's not supporting it, for helping us," ..."We think it's going to push us over the top"
An annoying, even slightly offensive comment to which we reply:
"Wishing to rob gay people of their freedom? Trying to exalt religious belief above constitutional freedom? Denying the independent judiciary their role in the process? Believing that majority tyranny should always rule? Ignoring the benefits that marriage equality has already brought to the state? Ms. Eddings Brown, with all due respect -- your side passed "over the top" a LONG time ago!
And while you might be right that historically, the African-American voting block has shown less willingness to get behind gay rights measures, you are underestimating that this is a changed world. You are underestimating that the years of anti-gay hijinks from folks like yourself have lifted the wool from SO MANY sets of eyes. You are underestimating the power of the enlightened youth vote. You are underestimating the millions of people who have seen marriage equality hold court in the Golden State for the past few months, belying the fear-mongery threats that you all have projected upon the peaceful custom. You are underestimating how much unintentional damage the "pro-family" side has done to itself, overplaying its disingenuous hand to a point that has actually helped LGBT people highlight the cruel and discriminatory realities that pervade our less-than-equal American citizenships.
Like most every move of the side that wishes to stem the tide of progress, you, Ms. Eddings Brown, are looking only to the past to gain insight into the future. But we are confident that California (and America as a whole) is done with being fooled by the side of cruel and divisive rhetoric, and will instead line up in record numbers to vote for the REAL. And you are failing to see that the REAL belongs to us."
