On which side of the (sticky, popcorn-laden) aisle did Americans fall?
Are you an observer of both the culture war and the box office? Do you wonder what sort of clues the nation's weekend movie-going habits might hold in terms of the November elections? Well consider this:
From the right -- The conservative-themed film An American Carol (which uses gays and gay rights as punchlines) grossed an estimated $3.8M during its opening weekend. Playing in 1,639 U.S. locations, the film had a $2,325 per-screen average.
From the left -- Bill Maher's Religulous (which features an "ex-gay"-challenging segment) made an estimated $3.5M. However, it only screened in only 502 theaters (less than 1/3 of Carol's), giving the God-examining doc a hefty $6,972 per-screen average.
A widespread roll-out with smaller pockets of support vs. a smaller, more targeted roll-out with high numbers of passionate supporters. It's an interesting commentary, for sure. But what does this weekend's box office data really say about the current state of our political landscape? Well...
