Video: Yes, anti-gays -- we've REALLY thought about your cruel propsition. Daily.

by Jeremy Hooper

The latest disgusting piece of kid-exploiting fear-mongery from "yes on 8," a team of grown adults who plunged the concept to new depths:

Okay, let's please think about it:

Religious freedoms -- For the seven billionth time, we are talking about CIVIL Marriage. And the idea that one's personal religious freedoms should tyrannically trump the civil rights of a minority is a concept not supported by any governing document. Well, except of course for the ones that have been altered to explicitly shun gay people.

"Gay domestic partners already have the same legal rights" -- That's a lie. An easily verifiable lie. Marriage is the currency that we all accept and understand for relationship recognition, and so on a basic level, asking gays to get in an alternate line is patently offensive. But in addition to marriage being the universally recognized vehicle for state-recognized legal commitment, returning marriage to a DP system would run the risk of returning gay couples to a state of non-parity in areas like: out-of state recognition, medical decision-making (especially while traveling elsewhere), inheritance taxes, survivor benefits, family leave, spousal and child support, immigration, etc. And, obviously, it would mean the state of California altering its most precious governing document so that is EXPLICITLY speaks out against the state's gay and lesbian citizens. So on that token, it also robs all of us (gay, straight, and otherwise) of forward progress in the areas of fairness and respect!

"Taught about it in school" -- The "indoctrination" argument is getting so tired. Marriage is not something that is "taught" in schools. Families are taught to be respected. Bullying is discouraged. Truth of the public landscape is acknowledged. And guess what? THAT HAPPENS NOW, AND WILL HAPPEN FOR ALL OF PERPETUITY! Because schools are places where actuality is (hopefully) acknowledge. And guess what else? Gay people exist. Some of them are even students at the school, and many more are friends and family members of students at the school. So yes, an accurate assessment of the world's people is hopefully something that will always be embraced at any public school on the landscape. But the idea that all of a sudden schools are going to be "forced" to put Joe & Steve's wedding slides into the curriculum is beyond the pale!

If you "yes on 8ers" want to encourage thought, then START. FRICKING. THINKING! And by thinking, we mean the kind that comes from an informed mind, not a biased "pro-family" playbook!

Your thoughts

What about the stupidity of "restores traditional marriage?" Same-sex marriage has done nothing that in any way impinges upon traditional marriage. And Prop 8 does nothing that benefits traditional marriage in any way.
