'What I Didn't Tolerate on My Summer Vacation' by I.M. Biased

Are you a high school or college student? Could you use some scratch to help subsidize your educational endeavors? Have you bought into the cruel, unjust, far-right-propagated lie that gays are unsavory beasts unfit for civil equality? Well you're in luck, young bookish 'mo foes, for an organization called the Traditional Family Coalition has set up a scholarship program, wherein the sole criteria is an inability to pen an essay (of no more than 5 pages) on the evils of same-sex marriage:

Bad news for gay students who don't wish to see discrimination cultivated amongst their peers; good news for those physically-inclined students upset that all-star "Smear The Queer" performance doesn't typically qualify one for an athletic scholarship!

Your thoughts

Just a thought. My daughter is a senior in high school and we are in the midst of college visits now (as much as I hate to do it, I am taking time out from destroying our civilization to do these visits).

Anyway, I may see if she wants to apply for this scholarship with a paper on being raised by a gay dad.

I doubt she'll get any money but if several kids could do this, and there is someone there with a shred of a conscience left, it may make them think.

Parents - put your kids to work!

And in point 2, those anti public education rocket scientists used the wrong form of the word "fare".

God bless you Steve - it's a great idea but threre is NO ONE THERE WITH A SHED OF A CONSCIENCE LEFT - they had none to begin with. I do hope they are deluged with scholarship papers - they would be the BEST entrants in any event - though not winners in their eyes. tom

Steve: I'm with Tom -- I don't think anything pro-gay is going to get very far. However, I would suggest entering a cleverly crafted, highly satirical piece, wherein you totally take the piss out of them without them ever realizing it. Hell, their rhetoric reads like satire anyway -- use that to your advantage! Take their money.

I KNEW IT!

This is how they come up with all their talking points against us!

No wonder their logic is flawed, their reasoning is overly simplistic, and their facts are nonexistant: they're relying on children to write their arguments for them!

I like that they included homeschoolers, though they did hyphenate the word homeschool. The general consensus among homeschoolers is that we treat it as one word, no hyphen needed. That's entirely beside the point, but it did make me almost smile.

While I don't know that many people who are gay and homeschool I do know a lot of people who homeschool and are accepting of me and my family. I blogged about this contest hoping that maybe one or two will at least try to send in an essay. My own children are too young as of yet.

Steve,

You're wasting your time.

The Traditional Values Coalition is a family business. Lew Sheldon, the father and founder, is living in his own private reality. It's an open secret that he's nuts and even the Republican legislators - who treat him respectfully in public - privately acknowledge that he's not rational and give him no mind.

And the last I knew of his kids, they were in it for the game. It was about winning more than about what they were actually fighting for.

Apparently the young essayists don't need to know how to punctuate -- see "(i.e. 1 dad 1 mom and children)" ... don't need to know the difference between a sentence fragment and a question -- see question marks ending Points 1 and 2 ... and don't need to know what a compound modifier is -- see "same sex marriage" instead of "same-sex marriage." (The misspelling of fair/fare was mentioned in an earlier comment.)

Timothy: This is actually something separate from TVC -- this is TFC. From what I can tell, it is a Chinese-American Christian group.
