FYI: Mormon temple protest

by Jeremy Hooper

We hear there is some intense protesting currently going on at the Westwood Mormon Temple in Los Angeles, CA. Some are already calling this a new Stonewall.

Watch raw video:

[Alright, we're pulling the video feed now. However, you can still watch archived video form yesterday's protest here: NewsRaw LIVE [KNBC]

Oh, and also:

Send a message to the Mormon Church, whose members raised more than $15 million to fund the deceitful advertising campaign for Proposition 8, the initiative that takes away the right to marry for same sex couples in California!
Invalidate Prop 8

**UPDATE, 11/7: Andy Towle has some coverage:

Your thoughts

Hey, I'm ready for whatever it takes. I've been committed to gay marriage all my life. I was born gay and was born desiring marriage. When I saw some romantic movie or Leave it to Beaver family stuff, that was me. This is not a setback, this is a kick in the butt for me. I plan to get married in California with my guy. Now, I can go to several other state, Canada, other countries and get married. But I just decided it will be California......California or Bust, the saying goes......When I was a kid in Odgen Utah, us kids chanted the tune, California Here we come, back where we started from. It will be a statement to be married there, a victory. THe mormon church, a barrier. I like barriers. They build character. I have a sign that says, every wall is a door. Gays have their own spirituality....we can pull it together. Obama said, we can. Now, its time we say NO to the mormon church, in what ever way is most effective (lets get together, get us some consultants on this), and get the job done fast. Lets get marriage back in California and every state. ML King said when one is disenfranchised, all suffer whether they know it or not. Now, the mormons, they think they stopped us,but what is just the opposite is true, they woke up the sleeping giant?

One commenter, obviously a Mormon, lds, says,

Nobody wants their chaples, mosques, synagogues, temples etc defiled by performing an act that they believe God forbids.

Hey, I know pleanty of christian churches that accept me. The US Hindu Church just issued a statement regarding tolerance. Well, the catholics, mostly gay clergy anyways, messed up. Mormons, a history of control of others, narcissistic personality disorder. By the way, missy, google "secret temple practices of mormons".

black wome in LA voted yes on prop 8 so the can keep black men in the the closet and then they will have someone to marry, also for the ones who have men in the prison having anal sex they want them to get out and come back to them...................i am a gay friendly black woman and i have four female relatives in my family who have married down-low men, because of the hate and ignorance that these black churches teach...

Lets remember, gays are people, have rights. Lets look out for them.

"Such an emotionally charged issue concerning the most personal and cherished aspects of life — family, identity, intimacy and equality — stirs fervent and deep feelings.

Most likely, the election results for these constitutional amendments will not mean an end to the debate over same-sex marriage in this country.

We hope that now and in the future all parties involved in this issue will be well informed and act in a spirit of mutual respect and civility toward those with a different position. No one on any side of the question should be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information.

It is important to understand that this issue for the Church has always been about the sacred and divine institution of marriage — a union between a man and a woman.

Allegations of bigotry or persecution made against the Church were and are simply wrong. The Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage neither constitutes nor condones any kind of hostility toward gays and lesbians. Even more, the Church does not object to rights for same-sex couples regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights, so long as these do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches.

Some, however, have mistakenly asserted that churches should not ever be involved in politics when moral issues are involved. In fact, churches and religious organizations are well within their constitutional rights to speak out and be engaged in the many moral and ethical problems facing society. While the Church does not endorse candidates or platforms, it does reserve the right to speak out on important issues.

Before it accepted the invitation to join broad-based coalitions for the amendments, the Church knew that some of its members would choose not to support its position. Voting choices by Latter-day Saints, like all other people, are influenced by their own unique experiences and circumstances. As we move forward from the election, Church members need to be understanding and accepting of each other and work together for a better society.

Even though the democratic process can be demanding and difficult, Latter-day Saints are profoundly grateful for and respect the ideals of a true democracy."

This is from LDS.org I hope it helps clarify the position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

I am greatful that we live in a country where we have freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Love and Peace,
L.G.

LG: Yes, we've written about this statement. Unfortunately those words are not loving and peaceful, but rather an attempt to put a positive spin on the LDS Church's deplorable role in Prop 8's passage.

And the fact that the LDS church finds no problem in referring to this as one of the "moral and ethical problems facing society" is the most telling part of the whole statement.

We are tired of being slapped and then being told, "oh, no offense intended!"

Posted by: G-A-Y | Nov 12, 2008 12:18:52 PM

GAY:
I think I can understand why it would feel like a slap and I can definitely see why you would take offense even if none was intended. Don't you think it would help both sides of the debate though, to look past the inflammatory statements and look at each other's intentions with a desire to understand one another?
I think it is a great moral and ethical problem when the rights of two parties are in conflict. Where do my rights end and yours begin? Am I morally obligated to accept something that goes against my fundamental beliefs? I don't know but I think if we were to really look closely at what each side wants it is not that different. We both want our rights protected and we both want freedom of expression.

Posted by: L.G. | Nov 12, 2008 1:53:21 PM

Well LG, here's where you and everyone on your side can start: By stopping the implication that we want you to accept anything that goes against your beliefs. Please, I'm serious -- listen to me on this:

WE. ARE. SEEKING. CIVIL. EQUALITY.

Nobody is trying to stop you from praying in whatever way you want! Nobody is asking churches to marry anyone that they don't want to marry. Just like churches, temples, mosques, etc. can now refuse to marry anyone who is outside of their faith or not in good standing, they can refuse to marry gay couples! And the decions on those matters are for the churches to decide. We do not have a say in that, nor are we seeking one!

And you ask where your rights end? Well in America, you do not have the right to use your religious beliefs to stifle others CIVIL equality.

Your side would do yourselves some good if you would start actually acknowledging what we are saying to you!

Again, i take brigham young's words to heart for the core of the mormon church: if any scoundrels come around, slit their throats.

nuff said.

Ban mormons. now.

This poor little me crap........ just you wait. Lets see how it impacts your church for another 2010 run on prop 8...at least another 20 million on that will keep your missionaries out of russia and brazil spreading the golden plates crap to naive people.

damn, i miss the days when the fags would stay in the closet, and everything was "fabulous".

Posted by: Faggot McQueen | Nov 15, 2008 4:42:17 AM

i find it ironic how practically every faggot in existence is the result of a heterosexual relationship. it is a choice. nobody forced you to stick your tiny dick up bruce's ass.

Posted by: Faggot McQueen | Nov 15, 2008 4:59:16 AM

I have to wonder what possesses someone like you, "f.m," to spend the early hours of a Saturday morning writing crap like that. I mean you're not even using a real name nor are you adding anything to the conversation. You just, for whatever reason, had a burning desire to "stick it to" those pesky gays. Why? What do you gain? What is your motivator?

I vote insecurity.

ban mormon marriages, they are ruining the sanctity of the family, and shame god by what they do in their churchs. legislate now

Posted by: Not Llarry Craig | Nov 16, 2008 2:53:24 PM

I am not gay. The rest of you do your thing, just keep it in the privacy of your own homes.

Posted by: Larry Craig | Nov 17, 2008 1:50:42 AM

Mormons don't hate gays. They just do not support homosexual acts. And there is no reason why Mormons shouldn't be entitled to their beliefs just as No-on-8 supporters have theirs. Violence is not the answer so before you cause vandalism and damage to others' property and values, think about your own beliefs on war and discrimination. Just because someone else shows descrimination on moral issues doesn't mean you should be a hypocrite and hate them for their beliefs.

Posted by: Nephi | Nov 18, 2008 9:00:53 PM

Nephi, your bs mormon values. When nazi germany and Hitler said, hey, we have the right to out opinion , the world woke up after 9 million jews and 500,000 gays were gased. No, you have no right to hate and abuse. I will do everyting in my power to stop you, reveal you, drain your money, remove your temples, tax you, ridicule you, and halt you, and if needed, legislate your church. Stop, you Nazi bullies. I remember your great leader's quote, which tells me of how kind and altruistic you are, Slit their throats. I live in a neighborhood of 90% mormons. They wouldn't give a non mormon the time of day. Sorry, maybe there's 10 million mormonsin the world, but there' 40 milloions fags in this country, and we're not going to take your cutesy talk and not going to take a loss in 2010 california marriage. F U Nephi.
