Mom, dad, camera crew, national TV audience: I'm gay!
Worried about the end of "The L Word" leading to a de-gayed Showtime? Well fret not, far-too-concerned-with-pay-cable reader. The network announced today that they are developing a new reality series called "Way Out," which will document gay people's decisions to come out to their friends and family:

The de-closeting series comes from the executive producer of A&E's tastefully done "Intervention," so we're assuming/hoping the show will be tasteful rather than "Springer"-ish. But let's get real: It's reality TV. Don't expect every episode to revolve around a Berkeley, CA, teen coming out to his parents, Moonbeam and Woodchip, amidst hugs and "We Shall Overcome" sing-a-longs. Mixed in with the PFLAGs, there's bound to be a few family member who forget to include the P and the L when screaming the aforementioned organization's name.
There's no word on when we might get to see the good, the bad, and the newly-rainbowed. But if you see one of your friends being followed by a camera movement in the next six months, you might wanna hold off on outing them until the lighting has been properly adjusted.

Very glad to hear about this. Done well, coming out stories are very moving and effective. LOGO's Coming Out Stories is a prime example of how to do this with taste and class. As a gay man who was featured in LOGO's Coming Out photo exhibit, which was merely an online adjunct to the show, I can attest to how popular was the entire production.
