New Yorkers: How to protect your forcibly outsourced union
Despite the economic windfall that could come with letting folks get gay married, we queer New Yorkers still have destination weddings forced upon up. But fortunately, when we do hop on a plane, train, or automobile to have our paperwork and "I dos" taken care of in a neighboring locale that does deem us worthy, our home state will recognize our unions upon our return home. It's an annoying workaround, but it's far better than the states where a marriage recognition victory is if the governor will refer to his gay staffer's partner as his "special friend" rather than as his mere roommate.
However, despite the uniquely accommodating status, there are still some problems that can arise. This is exactly why Lambda Legal, Empire State Pride Agenda, the New York Civil Liberties Union, and the American Civil Liberties Union have joined forces to put out a document in which they detail all of the rights that are guaranteed, allowing same-sex couples to ensure that their higher powers aren't acting like rights-denying arsefaces. Learn it and love it, married NY gays:

Wow, I didn't even know about some of those marriage benefits. Good to know same-sex couples can now shuck shellfish on their spouse's permit. : ) Seriously though, it was educating.
