Video: Small town, gay bar

by Jeremy Hooper

This report comes from Marie Cunningham, Fellow at USC Annenberg School of Journalism:

Flawed health stats culled from the Book of Paul (Cameron)? Locals suggesting that gays should go back in their closets? A unanimous city council vote in support of Prop 8? That Hawaiian shirt?! Honey, we ain't in West Hollywood anymore!

But a big brava to those equality activists who are taking on California's blood red pockets. Any armchair advocate can canvass West Hollywood. It takes a special commitment to step away from the choir and instead preach to the hungry moral guard dogs.

Your thoughts

Fun fact: The infectious disease Tularemia caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis is named after Tulare County.

The No on 8 campaign’s mistake (among many), was not engaging with voters in the more conservative Central Valley areas such as Tulare and Fresno counties. They even managed to lose one Bar Area county (Solano). You are correct that most of the rallies and campaign events were either in the Castro or West Hollywood neither of which are exactly hotbeds of antigay activity. Meanwhile, the Yes on 8 campaign carpeted the state with those obnoxious yellow and blue "Protect Marriage" yard signs.
