Audio: This 'culture war' is all fun and games until someone seeks to execute you

by Jeremy Hooper

Steven-AndersonFeeling good about America's seemingly growing acceptance of LGBT people, even among people of deep faith? Yea? Well here, let us ruin that for you.

These lil' bits o' theological charm come from Steven L. Anderson, a Baptist preacher based in Tempe, AZ. If you're a gay decent person, be prepared to be appalled. If you're Barney Frank, be prepared to prepare a defamation lawsuit:

*MANY, MANY MORE: Faithful Word Baptist Church

*UPDATE: MSNBC picks up on this, highlighting Stephen's claim that he "is gonna pray for Barack Obama to die and go to hell..so that our country can be saved."

*UPDATE2: More audio clips, plus evidence that Stephen spoke at his local TEA party: Steven Laid Bare [G-A-Y]

Your thoughts

If god did institute the death penalty, then he instituted the death penalty for adulterers, people who work on the sabbath, children who curse their parents, and a whole host of other offenses. He conveniently doesn't mention those.

This guy is unhinged. Interesting thing, though, aside from that one older male voice, it didn't appear that many others in that congregation were speaking up in agreement with him. I would suspect that anyone else was in that congregation, they would have been scared shitless of this raving maniac's screaming.

To hell with your God.

If you think this is bad, you should read some of his essays. The following is one of my favorite quotes so far:

"If music without drums, syncopation, or a rock beat is acceptable music, then “Yesterday” by the Beatles would be suitable for a Christian. This song has no drums, syncopation, or rock n roll beat – so what’s wrong with it? It doesn’t talk about drugs, illicit behavior, or violence – so what’s wrong with it? What’s wrong with it is the source. It was written by God-hating communist devils. Rock n roll music was pioneered by ungodly sinners like Little Richard, a sodomite filthy animal, and Ray Charles, a heroin addict."

I had no idea the Beatles were "God-hating Communist devils." I'll have to listen for Lenin references when I play Rubber Soul again. And I have to say, the Little Richard description is utterly charming.

Oh, and as a side note... it shouldn't be surprising that this man has no formal education or seminary training. He believes that Bible college is evil--that's in another essay. How convenient!

Sounds better in the original German.

Posted by: marsmannetje | Aug 19, 2009 3:05:28 PM

I agree, it does sound better in the original German. XD

This man is preaching evil and hate. And it's obvious that his congregation agrees with him, because no one stood up and told him to STFU, or walked out.

If history is any lesson, we all know where this kind of mindset leads. It isn't a pretty path.

At least he's honest - I can deal with straight-forward hatred much better than the "hate the sin, love the sinner" crowd.

Both those videos are gone, FYI. I wanted to hear 'em, too...

I do believe the medical term for such a fellow is "wackadoodle".

Posted by: Bill S | Aug 19, 2009 4:23:40 PM

Well it's a good thing I pulled the audio before they were yanked from YT.

Posted by: G-A-Y | Aug 19, 2009 4:39:07 PM

Wow, recruiting? Really? What is this, 1975?

Yes, his website is amazing. I'd swear it was parody in spots. Here's a quote:

"Pastor Anderson holds no college degree but has well over 100 chapters of the Bible committed to memory, including almost half of the New Testament."

Well then! Certainly beats an education any day!!

Posted by: Chris | Aug 19, 2009 4:45:18 PM

His mother must be proud. All these birthers and deathers, and anti-gay supporters are no better than this guy. I least he has the balls to stand up be truthful about how he feels.

Posted by: DairyQueen | Aug 19, 2009 4:51:22 PM

I wish I could remember where I first read this: The bible is very much like a Rorschach test, what an individual sees in it tells a lot about the individual.

Posted by: SammySeattle | Aug 19, 2009 4:57:04 PM

Also, he has mp3s of sermons on his website. I'm not going to download them to my work computer, so they'll have to wait til I get home (they may even be the source of the youtube vids).

I can basically see his church from my office window - where I'm sitting right now - and I've never felt so cold in 101F weather.

Good on Jeremy for snagging the audio. It seems he's continuing to repost the videos on his account as soon as they get pulled down for violating the TOS. I wonder how long it will be until his account gets shut down...again?

I sent a link to this page to the Southern Poverty Law Center...

Chris,

I was a little confused at first too. I thought this might have been taken from the Seventies.

This ignoramus is about to preach himself into a courtroom on grounds for defamation.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the weirdest stories that I've ever read. Lot, a foreigner living in Sodom, provides shelter to two angels sent by God to destroy the city. All the men in Sodom arrive at Lot's house and demand Lot to bring the angels out so that the Sodomites might 'know' them. Whether one interprets that as an act of inhospitality or homosexual gang rape doesn't mean God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because all it's male citizens were gay(or faggots in Anderson's mind) or engage in consensual gay sex. And isn't weird that ALL the men in the town were gay? San Francisco isn't even like that.

Finally got around to watching/listening to the second posting; standard vitriol for this guy, but hearing his shrieking about what a joyful, happy guy he is made it all worth it.

Posted by: meltedrubbersoul | Aug 19, 2009 6:03:35 PM

Man! I need to get busy. I haven't raped, violated or molested anyone yet. If I don't meet my quota for the month, those in charge of the Homosexual Agenda (c) are going to take away my Design Star watching privileges.

Who wants a cookie?

Posted by: stojef | Aug 19, 2009 6:46:57 PM

*shudder
I was literally lost for words when I heard this, jaw hit the floor and everything.

On a more specific note, to wipe away one of his claims from the 1st clip, there aren't more of us than there were last year, there's the same amount, we're just tired of being pushed aside and forced into hiding. We're coming out in the open and making sure others know that we're here, and we're people too. Not only that but we're doing it with one hell of a lot more decency that this nutjob

Posted by: dragon88 | Aug 19, 2009 7:22:59 PM

Don't forget, KZ, lot also tried to appease the crowd by offering his daughters up to be raped. Then later, after they fled the city, he got drunk and had sex with both of them himself.
I've always assumed that when the men of Sodom demanded that Lot turn of the angels "that we may know them", that it wasn't about sex-that they were paranoid and distrustful and wanted to find out who these strangers were. It makes a lot more sense in the context of the story than believing that they just wanted to commit a gang rape. Even if the latter intepretation was the correct one, it wouldn't be a condemnation of homosexuality but of sexual assault.

Posted by: Bill S | Aug 19, 2009 7:30:05 PM

Damn stojef, I 'twas gonna say that.

Posted by: Will | Aug 19, 2009 7:34:34 PM

If you go to the church's web-site, you can find a variety of the sermons that have been given.
The last one (08/16/09pm Sunday) is entitled "Why I Hate Barack Obama".
At least his hate is spread out...

Posted by: foundit66 | Aug 19, 2009 9:35:30 PM

This guy doesn't have an education? Shocking, I would never have guessed this ignoramous was an uneducated buffoon.

Posted by: Owen | Aug 19, 2009 9:52:16 PM

The United Methodist got faggots and dykes behind the pulpit. Freedom of speech is wasted on this f***** jackass.

Posted by: Owen | Aug 19, 2009 9:55:38 PM

They have a family blog.

Posted by: Owen | Aug 19, 2009 9:58:37 PM

Because societies without Biblical law don't have the death penalty. *epic eyeroll*

I really don't understand the reactionary Christian impulse to gang up on people. This rhetoric of hate has been a movement within the religion since the first century. They'll always find some group to unite against. Right now, it's non-straight people. Tomorrow, it will be people who eat lobsters.

Posted by: Kaye | Aug 19, 2009 10:36:49 PM

Evil, evil man. Stupid heteroshit. Blind fool that he is, he doesn't see that it's straight men who have destroyed the world through their wars, greed, violence, etc., not gays or woment(hough they had a role in this)

Posted by: nikkon | Aug 20, 2009 1:59:40 AM

This guy makes me miss good old Fred and Shirley in Wichita

Posted by: Jake | Aug 20, 2009 2:08:01 AM

I wish I could whack him over the head with his own bible.
