Audio: Putting discrimination on the defensive

by Jeremy Hooper

Finally, someone has done it: Taken the same basic structure that NOM has been using against us in radio ad after radio ad, and flipped the script so that it instead supports the good and fair fight. Take it away, Garden State Equality:

Radio Commercials, November 2009 [GSE]

Our movement needs to do more of this! They are on the offensive here, not us. Make them answer for it!

*ALSO: here's our oft-regurgitated, homespun response to the ad (ours was to the 'Annie' version of the ad, but its the exact same script as the 'Jayla' one):

Kudos to Garden State Equality for calling out NOM on it's own bullshit.

Damn, that was a pretty fabulous offensive move! (Our state [Iowa] should run ads like that!) So, now, I'm curious as to how NOM might attempt to counter it using fear-based tactics that have hitherto proven so effective?! After all, they are making the argument by vilifying Gay people in a manner that scares parents about the thought of their kids ever knowing/ learning about Gay people; and shifting the argument away from one of civil/equal rights to one of individual rights opposed to their perceived tyranny of the State! More people across the US need to be told that "CIVIL UNIONS" and "DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS" have been found NOT to work in the way in which they were designed. And, Maggie claim that separate-but-(un)equal is good enough for us is disingenuous when they have targeted states that are only (for the time being) allowing for DPs or CUs. I don't think they'll be satiated until every state attempts to do what TX. did--ban any possibility for Gay marriage and any marriage-like legal recognition/ institution!

In fact, it seems to be implied in the NOM ad where they are asking voters to vote only for a candidate who'll support their personal religious ideals!

Oh, and BTW, I totally love your "home-spun" response! Now, THAT'S the one we need to be airing in Iowa, too; as well as ads denouncing their ad in which a Christian private school teacher paraded herself as a public school teacher, as well as the Wirthins, and the whole lots of them to show how ruthless NOM's campaign REALLY is!
