Video: The Purpose Driven [Shirking of Homo-Hostile Responsibility]

by Jeremy Hooper

He will surely go to his grave denying his considerable role in passing Proposition 8.  He will alsoconveniently overlook his other, more outrageous comments, like when he suggested that gay peopleshould stifle their feelings, directly comparing that notion to the way that he might stifle his desire to sleepwith numerous women. But the most egregious part of all of it?  That he acts like his opposition to gays'"in sickness sand in health" vows are completely negated because of his work against sickness ingeneral:

He has punched us in the gut.  Now he wants to go on his merry way, hands clean, moral high ground forcible staked, and bank account ever-more-filled.  All the while continuing to tell the world that we gay folk are living a life that is less "purpose driven" than his own flock.

Do we deny that Pastor Warrne does commendable work elsewhere.  Nope.  Not even a little bit.  But our schoolyard bully was quite willing to help rescue the kick balls whenever they got stuck in the playground's trees.  It didn't change the fact that he had kicked several kids in the balls just a few moments before!

Your thoughts

"Do we deny that Pastor Warrne does commendable work elsewhere. Nope. Not even a little bit."

I do. To some extent.

Rick Warren loves to trumpet his efforts to fight AIDS in Africa. However, according to the guardian, his work is not exactly commendable.

***Even local HIV campaigns – which have been heavily influenced by the evangelical church with a bias towards abstinence over condom use – have deliberately avoided targeting gay men for both prevention and access to treatment.

"This means many gay men here think Aids is a non-issue, which is so dangerous," said Mugisha, who together with a few colleagues, has risked arrest by agitating in recent years for a change in the HIV policy.***

We need to remember who these evangelicals are. Rick Warren is prominent among them. So it is not unfair to say that Warren's interference in AIDS policy in Uganda has led to increased infection and death among gay Ugandans.

I find it interesting that Warren will "work with anyone" including gay people to fight AIDS, but he only seems interested in helping those who are not gay.
