Photo: When Matt was but a pup
Just a little silliness for your Saturday. A reader sent us the following photo of a young, strapping, pretty darn cute Matt "one man violently cramming his penis into another man’s lower intestine and calling it love" Barber, from back when simple teen fun was the goal, not making LGBT teens like Constance McMillan hate themselves:
"Culture war" anthropologists believe this may be the literal moment when Matt drank the Kool-Aid.
What happened to him? He certainly didn't age well!

Wow, Matty grew up to be a Concerned Woman.

Not to be overly critical or hurtfully incisive - and you know that I have made great strides on that front lately (PSYCH) - but what I see in that pic is a knuckle-dragging, unibrowed, bullyesque Neanderthal, who appears to be underaged at a kegger getting shitfaced. And, the only part of that that I find in any way redeeming, is the "underaged at a kegger getting shitfaced" part, except for the fact that liver impaired alcoholic bullies tend to ratchet-up the belligerent after they start drinking.
He probably found gawd in a 12-step program, and is still wrestling (or was he a boxer - I always get those two confused) with those demons. As long as he's getting help, that's the important thing - don't want his second wife bringing him up on battering charges...

What happened to him? The anger inside finally made it to the outside.

Strangely enough, he's more meticulous with his appearance now. Note the unibrow which he no longer has, I don't think?
Anyway, I guess that's just what happens when you come out of the closet as an anti-gay bigot. Lots more grooming & mani/pedi, etc.

I think his description of gay love was the description of what happened to him in the bathroom right after this photo was taken. Maybe that's why he hates us so much.

While at first blush, he is a little cute, when you really look, I agree with Dick: knuckle-dragging, unibrowed, bullyesque Neanderthal, who appears to be underaged at a kegger getting shitfaced. I knew guys like that and at parties I would (maybe, occasionally) pine after them and if they did pay attention, the outcome usually wasn't pleasant. Matt B. belongs to the group of men who don't like 1) women; 2) gays; and 3) themselves. Sad, really.

I look at that photo and in a way I feel sorry for him. What a wasted life he leads and he hasn't a clue of what real happiness is.

Lordy... I suppose that if I went dredging through my old pictures I might find Andrea Lafferty (nee Sheldon). I'm absolutely certain I have Steve Sheldon, her brother.

I'm not sorry for him. He's everyone I ever hated in school. Violent and primitive. I wouldn't get into an elevator with him, that's for damn sure.

This is "pretty darn cute"? The uni-brow, the nose? The prospect of dating this could actually turn me straight.

@Tom: I meant "pretty darn cute" in the innocent, high school kind of way. After dealing with Matt for so long, and hearing him plunge to such unbelievable depths in his rhetoric, it's kind of sweet, in a weird way, to see a version of him that seems so much less hostile (judging not only by the pic but also the commentary that came along with the photo). I've said before that he's the one "pro-fam" person who I will never meet alone in person, because based on his overheated words over the years, he seriously seems like someone who might fly off the handle and act stupid (i.e. physical). But I don't see the same kind of aggression in teen Matt's face.
I posted the pic not to attack his looks. Hell, I'm sure many of us could have used some tweezers in HS. I posted it because I think it's fascinating to see these professionally anti-gay players as humans, going through life the way so many of us did. I like the character study involved in it all.

Hey Big J, I've had my brain set to "Historian"-mode all month long, so I gotta' ask: Were you being humorous, or are you aware of *actual* "'culture war' anthropologists" that have studied such staunch conservatism and what leads them to fear and act against progressive cultures that favor minorities?

That's an interesting statement. I wonder how he would react if put into a position of anger with a gay man in the flesh. It's one thing to spew vile hatred towards people when the intended victims are not present....

@Wade MacMorrighan: Please see the study on Authoritarianism if you want to know why Conservatives are so fearful of everything (study by the University of Manitoba): http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/
It's quite long and dull, but it will give you the psychological reasons for these sheeples behavior.

He's extremely gay-groomed nowadays -- curiously. Complete with gay-guy/metrosexual hairstyle and hair product use, gay-guy/metrosexual sideburns, and gay-guy/metrosexual goatee. Is he trying to have other men be attracted to him?
