Iowa For Freedom: Please side with judge-backing, bias-thwarting, appeal-denying Prop 8 foe

by Jeremy Hooper

Arnold Schwarzenegger was publicly against Proposition 8, instead supporting the California Supreme Court's 2008 marriage equality ruling. Immediately after Prop 8 passed, the California governor expressed hope that the courts would soon overturn the discriminatory ban. And of course the latest news is that he will not challenge Judge Vaughn Walker's fair and reasoned federal court decision against 8, because he sees it as rightly decided.

But apparently none of that matters to the Iowans who are trying to expel the judges who rightly found their own state's marital bias to be unconstitutional. Because this so-called "Iowa for Freedom" coalition is actually using a Schwarzenegger quote on one of its button ads:

Exactly, Iowans For Freedom! And Gov. Schwarzenegger understands the independent judiciary's role in defending said freedom. Because it's not all about muskets and machine guns and atom bombs. While it's understandable how some folks who consider the evidence might think otherwise (like gay servicemen and women, for instance), at the end of the day, a fair, judicious mind also fits into this vision that we call American freedom!

Oh, and before you get any ideas, Iowa For Freedom: No, that one popular Terminator quote would not be a suitable way to tell someone that you'll never again be back.

**

*It gets even more ridiculous. They also misappropriate quotes from Nelson Mandela, Bob Dylan, Robert Frost, MLK, Eleanor Roosevelt, etc. Full set here.
