'Dilemma' looks for solution

by Jeremy Hooper

Screen Shot 2010-10-08 At 2.00.19 PmDue largely to complaints from one Anderson Cooper, Universal Pictures has pulled a trailer for the upcoming flick The Dilemma wherein star Vince Vaughn referred to electric cars as "gay." This from TMZ:

Bowing to growing outrage from the likes of Anderson Cooper, Universal Pictures has decided to pull the trailer for the movie "The Dilemma" -- and replace it with a new one some time today ... Universal tells TMZ

Don't underestimate the power of the Coop. He smacks down crazy blog rants, lands a deal to become the new Oprah, and allows electric cars to come out on their own time. It's the magical grey hair.

And besides, everyone knows the electric car is far more interested in what its tail pipe emits, not what it does or does not admit.

**UPDATE: Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood says, "Universal has now told me twice this morning that it sent an advance copy of its The Dilemma trailer to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for vetting and the organization didn't object to it." GLAAD, however, says:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Universal Announces Removal of Offensive Joke from Film Trailer

October 08, 2010, Los Angeles, CA - Last month Universal shared a link to the trailer for the film ‘The Dilemma’ with GLAAD. After reviewing, GLAAD called on Universal to remove the scene where the word ‘gay’ was used as a pejorative from the trailer. Today, after Anderson Cooper also spoke out against the scene, Universal confirmed to GLAAD that the offensive joke will be removed from promotional campaigns from this point forward, including in the trailer currently playing in movie theatres.

“The use of the word ‘gay’ in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.
