LexiCON: It's time we stop allowing Tony Perkins' vocabul-lusions

by Jeremy Hooper

We all know that "adhere to traditional family values" is far-right code-wording for a host of discriminatory things, most prominently resistance to LGBT people. So in the following joint quote from Tony Perkins and Lt. Col. Robert Maginnis from newly-listed SPLC hate group the Family Research Council, we took the liberty of removing that false phrase. Feel free to insert your own more truthful descriptor into the blank space, then ask yourself if traditional outlets like Fox News would be so quick to give that more transparent thought any credence:

"The military disproportionately draws young recruits from regions of our country that [_____________]. Will this change in policy enhance military recruitment? It would be the greatest of ironies if this most liberal administration in our history had to re-institute the military draft because they could no longer attract enough volunteers to serve."
Obama Owes America a Full Debate Before Ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' [Fox News]

"discriminate against gay people"?

"are scared of catching the 'mo"?

"think liberty and justice for a tax-paying citizen only becomes activated once said citizen interlocks his or her genitalia with its opposite-gendered counterpart"?

"fast forward through 'Modern Family's' Cam and Mitchell parts"?

There are many ways to state what Tony Perkins and related fellows are carelessly implying about the regions of the country they're monolithically typecasting. But booting qualified gay soldiers, even if technically part of our tradition, will never be a "family value."
