Divorce is costly, says group that's never done one thing to stop it

by Jeremy Hooper

Of all of the lock-solidly gay-banning states, Utah undeniably ranks at the top. In fact, in a 2010 New York Times graph tracking marriage equality support by state, Utah ranked at the lowest of all fifty, finding only 22% of Beehive Staters supporting the freedom.

So while it would always be pretty damn hypocritical for the National Organization For Marriage, a group 100% focused on gay and lesbian people's ring fingers, to note the marital problems posed by divorce when they themselves are doing absolutely nothing to focus on that issue, it takes on a whole new weight when the NOMmers randomly choose to focus on divorce as it exists in the state of Utah:

Is this not an example of NOM bearing out their own misfocus? Doesn't their own presentation show, without a doubt, that NOM's rhetorical "protect marriage" claims have absolutely no bearing on the practical level? Doesn't it show that conservatives can bar the gay windows all they want, but that will do nothing about the open door they give to divorce?

NOM would of course blame us, saying that gay people's marriages will exacerbate heterosexual divorce. That's when you just smile real big, shake your head, and say, "Mmm hmm, suuuuuuuure."
