MN For Marriage supportive pastor: 'Come for Lord's prayer, stay for man's unfair political games'

by Jeremy Hooper

Steve Goold, senior pastor at New Hope Evangelical Free Church in New Hope, MN, on how local faith leaders should preach over the next few months:

I believe every pastor who takes this issue seriously should expose what God has said very Gooldclearly in His Word, what I call the ‘Designer’s Manual on Marriage,’ and that not only should it be preached with compassion and authority, there should be additional points of education to the people of God relative to the practical impacts of marriage between one man and one woman as opposed to same-sex marriage”…“Additionally, pastors should be beseeching and facilitating prayer movement among their people; and yes, aggressively encouraging their congregations to vote yes on this amendment coming next year.

Meanwhile, gay equality activists everywhere will spend their Sundays not trying to force any pastor anywhere to perform a civil marriage ceremony. State licensing boards across the nation will continue to require the civil marriage license of any couple who would like state and federal marriage recognition, even while the religious ceremonial aspect remains an option, always. Affirming churches and faiths will continue to respect the bounds of both civil government and religious freedom. Oh, and same-sex couples will continue to work towards the betterment of the nation and our shared communities, even as the government takes an unfair sh*t on us in most states (and everywhere federally).

But the sad thing? Our choice to swim within the waters of reality surrounding this civil marriage debate might still lose out to the uber-motivations of those who will automatically vote the way their faith leaders tell them to -- in Minnesota, North Carolina, or any state where our rights are still forced before public popularity contest. And if we do lose? Then we'll simply take a deep breath, dig in our heels, and push forward just a little more until both the American dream and the principle of fair witness actually start to mean what we were told they would.

***Oh, and surprise, surprise: Goold's church seeks gay "change." Because these "marriage protectors" almost always do.
