Baltimore Archbishop angry MD lawmakers altered his 'sacred union' views, abilities; fortunately for him, they didn't

by Jeremy Hooper

Bishop-ObrienCardinal Edwin F. O’Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore:

"Now, Maryland’s politicians unconscionably have chosen political expediency over the good of society–the fundamental charge of their office–by daring to redefine this sacred union between one man and one woman. Their action poses a grave threat to the future stability of the nuclear family and the society it anchors. The Archdiocese will continue to advocate for the preservation of both and will eagerly and zealously engage its 500,000 members in overturning this radical legislation, and will join with the hundreds of thousands of others in this Archdiocese and throughout Maryland in aggressively protecting the God-given institution of marriage."

Actually, "the sacred union" can remain whatever you want it to be for whomever you want it to be, Cardinal O'Brien. What the state legislature chose was civil marriage equality over faith-based resistance. That, the church-separated stewardship of sound public policy is their actual charge of office!

I have no doubt that the Archdiocese of Baltimore will work overtime trying to exalt chosen religious views and ceremonies (an option for every married couple) above the state marriage license (a requirement for any couple that wants civil recognition). But that admittedly aggressive act won't change reality. Although it very well might change public opinion as more and more citizens start to see, know, and comprehend the faith overreaches that LGBT taxpayers face on a daily basis.
