Maggie belittles deep concerns of Julian Bond, AAMLC, others
NOM's past President and Chair, Maggie Gallagher, doesn't give credit to the Human Rights Campaign's NOM Exposed project, which actually broke the story. But the bigger insult is that she simply doesn't care what Julian Bond, the African American Ministers Leadership Council, or any number of outraged millions have to say about NOM's crude and cruel attempts to divide us as nation:
It’s always amusing to watch the media go to work to generate a non-story. In this case, it’s about “secret” documents that show NOM reaches out to black and Latino churches to fight gay marriage.
NOM’s response is here.
Mine is: Must be a slow news day over at BuzzFeed.
BuzzFeed Exclusive! NOM Thinks Gay Marriage Not a Civil Right! [NRO]
Ooh, ooh - I have a response too! Mine is: Callous.
*REMINDER of what the NOM doc actually says: It actively seeks to drive a wedge and to provoke equality activists into denouncing African American spokespeople:
“The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks—two key Democratic constituencies. Find, equip, energize and connect African American spokespeople for marriage, develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots…”
... "The Latino vote in America is a key swing vote, and will be so even more so in the future, both because of demographic growth and inherent uncertainty: Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values? We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity - a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation."
