The dangerous new idea NOM is pushing to defame pro-equality voices
For years the NOM crowd, led by the "protect marriage" movement's messaging strategist Maggie Gallagher, has been pushing the idea that those who oppose marriage equality will be treated like bigots. But now check this. Over on the blog, the National Organization For Marriage writer (Thomas Peters or someone else) is helping foster a truly chilling new meme that says a second term for pro-equality President Obama will lead the everyday same-sex marriage opponent to be treated as an "enemy of the state":

It's of course enraging to see how frequently and unashamedly those on the side of civil discrimination seize the "victim" role. But in this one, there is something even more unsavory. If they are the "enemies of the state" then that means the people on the other "side" of this fear-mongering are operating as some sort of evil monolith that is disconnecting citizens from their patriotic embrace of this country and its values. That is a lofty charge—one that weakened the debate, yes, but a negligent one that is also bound to cultivate abject hate (a word I don't use lightly) among the most fringe thinkers once they feel they are out of options.
There are good people having public conversations about this matter of civil fairness/limitation. We should all demand an immediate end to this nakedly provocative attempt to stir up animus.
