Like NOM before them, Liberty Counsel blatantly lies about NY 'farm'

by Jeremy Hooper

I already covered this when the National Organization For Marriage tried to lie into martyrdom. But now the Liberty Counsel is also trying to portray this, a business that happens to have the word "farm" in its name, as some sort of mom and pop backyard operation, which means I must cover the ground again.

First the video:

Chicken poop! This is not some little rink dink operation that occasionally does weddings, as Matt barber would have you believe. New York's Liberty Ridge Farm is a business. It is an LLC that holds daily events, private functions, corporate parties, and, yes—weddings. It is a company that sells general admission tickets for profit.

And when it comes to the wedding portion of the business, this "farm" is a venue just like any other. The company sells tents, catering packages, reception halls, tables, Screen Shot 2012-11-14 At 3.34.55 Pmchairs—the whole nine yards of nuptial goodness. One can also hire company staff as planners. Heck, the company even runs a wedding blog to tout its considerable offerings! It may not be the Plaza or the Waldorf, but it's not some dusty old shack that Old McDonald opens up out of the goodness of his heart either. This is a wedding company. One that operates for money. This is a business that is subject to the same nondiscrimination laws as any other business.

The far-right social conservatives love crap like this because it's something they can easily reduce. "Oh look, it's a 'farm'—that's wholesome," they say in the most duplicitous of tones. But the cold, hard truth (i.e. "traditional marriage" Kryptonite) is that any of these good "values voters" who continue to portray this matter of commerce as some sort of personally-targeted matter of conscience will be bearing as false of witness as one can one possibly bear. A family's private farm does not come with an interactive theme park map with its corn maze and wedding venue clearly demarcated. Liberty Ridge Farm does.
