Frank Schubert comments on the sister he legally strips of rights

by Jeremy Hooper

NOM Political Director and Prop 8 mastermind Frank Schubert has made quite a living off of pushing discrimination for certain people. Certain people like, for instance, his lesbian sister who, according to recent reports, is raising children with her domestic partner.

Annie Marie Schubert is her name, and she is currently building up a run for District Attorney of Sacramento County. But even though her brother has dedicated his professional life to keeping her legally separated from her partner and family, Frank Schubert felt a need to issue a statement saying that he is both happy for and supportive of her bid:

Look, I have no doubt that he loves and supports her candidacy, as far as that goes. But facts are facts. This is not a man who has simply "disagreed" with her politics—this is a person who makes a really good living leading campaigns in every state where LGBT rights go on a ballot. That's really major stuff that cuts right to the core. It's not just some minor debate about material issues. We can't just "agree to disagree" before passing the mashed potatoes. These are our lives, rights, and protections we are talking about!

It's also pretty darn duplicitous for Mr. Schubert to encourage others to focus only on his sister's qualifications when he is the one who builds his career around distracting "culture wars" that do nothing but stir up personal animus and heighten our divides. He clearly knows he made some sort of a bed or he wouldn't have issued this statement of supportive distance. But I don't think he really "gets it." Or if he does, he's not willing to own it.
