Anti-equality crowd crafts new symbol (*by co-opting one pro-equality movement's been using for five years)

by Jeremy Hooper

Anti-gay activist Dran Reese thinks she's found a new emblem:

"The white color stands in contrast to the rainbow colors that advocate same-sex marriage," Dran Reese, President of the Salt & Light Council, said in a statement.

"Rainbows are meant to show God's redemption, but this image has been co-opted by a movement that is antithetical to Biblical values," Reese added. "We're going to take back the rainbow by redeeming it with the white marriage bow."

Only thing? They can't have it. The white ribbon is already in use as a symbol—a symbol for marriage EQUALITY.

Since Prop 8's ignoble passage in 2008, the White Knot campaign has been using a tied, ivory-hued ribbon as a symbol for equality. While not quite at ubiquitous status, the image has been embraced by celebrities who stand on the right side of history…

…and, according to the campaign, has been picked up in 37 countries. TRANSLATION: A knotted white ribbon is a known commodity that stands in proud opposition to Ms. Reese's attempt to start a pro-discrimination meme.

Perhaps Ms. Reese should go with a pair of scissors instead. Cutting up certain people's ability to tie knots is, after all, her movement's true agenda.
