FRC: Gay Scouts cannot be 'morally straight'

by Jeremy Hooper

We gay folk simply cannot be upstanding and moral citizens. So goes the latest self-delegitimizing view that a senior Family Research Council staffer chose to state out loud:

"Earlier this week, I was interviewed by a very nice radio talk-show host about the proposal to allow what the Boy Scouts term 'open and avowed' homosexuality into Scouting itself.

During the conversation, I made a point about Scouts promising to be "morally straight," and the gentleman interviewing me said, "You can be morally straight without being sexually straight, can't you?"

I responded that Scouting was founded on Judeo-Christian moral principles and went on from there. But a more candid response would have been a simple "no." Morality encompasses human sexual behavior. The morality of the Scouts historically has been the morality of the Old and New Testaments, which teaches that the only sexually intimate behavior countenanced by God exists between a man and a woman within marriage
."

Family Research Council's Rob Schwarzwalder

I mean, really? Does the Family Research Council think the way for their side to win on this issue is through attacks on little gay boys' moral compasses? Here in a world where virtually everyone knows and LGBT person, are they seriously hoping to convince the greater majority of the intrinsic brokenness that supposedly exists within people like me?

At the FRC office, these questions apparently all culminate in a resounding "Yes!" Which of course means this entire civil rights debate is going to culminate in our side winning everything we seek even sooner than we might have, had we had an organized opposition movement that understood political pragmatism.
