NOM co-founder who denies Gov. Cuomo of his religious faith to head U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom

by Jeremy Hooper

Robert George is the new chairman of U.S. federal government commission on religious freedom:

Press Release: Robert P. George Elected USCIRF Chair [USCIRF]

That would be this Robby George:

-- Co-founder of and major driving force behind the National Organization For Marriage.

-- One of the key authors of that ignoble idea known as the Federal Marriage Amendment.

--Decried the NY marriage vote by looking back to a time when being gay was “beneath the dignity of human beings as free and rational creatures.”

-- Said soldiers who oppose homosexuality
are suffering under a new kind of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy because they aren't allowed to be openly-anti-gay toward their fellow soldiers

-- Argued that gay relationships have “no intelligible basis in them for the norms of monogamy, exclusivity, and the pledge of permanence.”

-- Speaking on the subject of same-sex marriage, says he and his allies
will defy "man-made law" that conflicts with their view on "God's law"

-- Suggested that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo shouldn’t even be considered a Catholic because by signing marriage equality into law, "he has made it clear that he simply does not believe what Catholicism teaches about sexual morality and marriage." Says of the Governor's faith: "No one is scandalized by Andrew’s beliefs or conduct because no one takes him to be a serious Catholic, that is, a Catholic who is serious enough about his faith to live by its tenets. "

-- Said marriage equality is “about sex,” not about love, commitment, and responsibility. Admitted he believes gay relations to be immoral: "The idea that is antithetical to those who are seeking to redefine marriage is that there is something uniquely good and morally upright about the chaste sexual union of husband and wife—something that is absent in sodomitical acts and in other forms sexual behavior that have been traditionally—and in my view correctly—regarded as intrinsically non-marital and, as such, immoral."

-- Pushes
dangerous myths about transgender kids

Robert George [GLAAD CAP]

This is truly outrageous! Robert George is a far-right, anti-LGBT activist, despite the buttoned-up role he plays in the media. He is quite literally the reason why we have an organization known as the National Organization For Marriage. On religious freedom, he has proven himself to be completely hostile to any person who reconciles his or her faith with LGBT inclusion (see his attack on Cuomo). With this position, he is clearly going to try to help the anti-LGBT movement (his movement, just so we're clear) foster the "gays are attacking religious freedom" meme that they have placed at the centerpiece of their declining fight.

Like I said—outrageous!
